My brother & sisters recently got into the Magic card game...I found someone selling these for 20 bucks, and I'm wondering if they'd make a good gift (birthdays coming up, etc). However, I don't really know much about these...I imagine they're using one of the later editions, but I'm not entirely sure.

Why wouldn't they be able to use them? There are (and I estimate) around 900 cards. Most are old school, which would be great to throw off some of their enemies. "****! I haven't seen a Thicket Basilisk in years!" And there are some newer editions as well, though nothing from the past, 7 or 8 years I would guess. Even a healthy collection of the gag set of cards, including Clam-I-Am and many other great funny cards!

I have no idea - I'm not too familiar with how the game works..I just know there are multiple editions, and I was under the impression they weren't usually mixed together? I could be wrong..it's not my thing. If you want to sell them, though, let me know what you're looking to get, and any particular cards that may be of interest for them. :)

See, I don't know if any of them are worth anything, there's just a decent chance where some of them are downright old. I heard there wasn't much of a market for this sort of thing, so I hadn't really been thinking about selling them. I'll have to weigh their sentimental value.

I also don't know how the game works anymore. I'd imagine it's nothing like it was when I played as a kid.

If they're just starting, it seems to be a good deal; however, most of the cards are from the Kamigawa block, which is by far the worst block released so far.

Certain cards I noticed, such as Joiner Adept and Seizan, Perverter Of Truth are very nice. For 20 dollars this is an okay deal, I would go through with it.

They have quite a few cards already (hundreds by now, I think)...maybe I should get a list of the uncommons and rares that they do have..?

I'll sell you my collection (which is quite vast and has quite a few good cards, though not really pertinent to tournaments) for 50 + shipping. I've got a few hundred cards, I just need money and don't need the cards anymore.

I was under the impression that Instants were no longer used.

To echo someone else, $20 seems like a great deal for 525 cards, especially when a booster pack (or whatever they call them) run $5-$10, if not more, and has < 10 cards. However, if they want to play with other people who play by current rules, it might not work out so well. (i.e. if instants are no longer playable... etc)
