This is why I don't like people driving my car

Mood:  :argh:

A while back in February I was forced to let my sister borrow my car since she had to move in Boston and her Honda was not insured. I was not to happy about the idea of letting her borrow my car since I’ve been trying to keep it in pristine condition, and if you saw it you could see I have it is in excellent condition. Well my parents told me that it had to be my car since they don’t trust her with our van and my mom’s Altima is a 2006, so what’s the solution? Trash my Sable. She had it for one week and the poor thing WAS trashed. I tried to warn my parents and they knew I was right. Needless to say it did get trashed.

When I got it back the front bumper had 2 scratches on it from her trying to parallel park she even told me she does not really know how to, and there was one on the side of the car... don’t know how that got there, the power steering was making an awful noise, AND there was food in the trunk. I’m serious when I opened the trunk it smelled like something crawled in there and died. She told me that it needed fluid but that was not the case at all…

Since then we’ve had the power steering pump replaced and its STILL making a noise and leaking on our driveway. My dad also buffed out the scratches but there is still one on the front bumper but very small now, but I notice it all the time. Also I put a little tree in my trunk to get arid of the smell. Now this is where the big thing comes in. I always though the trunk smelled cause of the food that was left in there for a week but NO that’s not the case at all.

Today I was at school and I was getting my homework out of my trunk and I noticed my papers soaking wet… strange. I go home and my dad and me look at the seals around the trunk to see if it’s leaking, we then continue to pull everything out and find a puddle in the corner. We then continue to pull the carpet in the trunk out and find approximately 2 gallons of water in the spare tire well, the cardboard like cover over that has MOLD growing on it. The spare tire and jack have rust in them as well. Good thing Taurus’ and Sables have a plug in there to let water out… me and my dad just stood there and watched 2 gallons of water pour out of the back of my car both with very disappointed looks on our face. Our neighbor was walking his dog and saw what was going on and stopped to talk to us about it.

My dad made a new wood/cardboard cover thing for the spare tire… this one is like this cardboardy wood that he had and we cut it and sanded it down. Thank god that thing was there otherwise there would have been mold on the carpet. We both have an idea of how she got the trunk wet as well… she was moving a book shelf in her car and I don’t think she could have fit it all the way in the trunk cause of the narrow opening so she probably traveled in the rain with the trunk open when she was moving…. The icing on the cake is that I also found a lighter in back behind the seat when I folded down the seats. She knows that it is a smoke free car; even my friends know that since like I said I want this car to be in very good condition.

Not a good way to end the day….

Unfortunately sometimes you get obligated into a corner in those situations. Before I had a car I sometimes had to borrow my sister's, so if I ever refused a request like that I'd be guilted into complying.

Well now you have an excuse to never let her (or anyone else) borrow your car again. Or if she does, have her give you collateral in the form of $$$, with the promise you'll give it back minus the cost of any repair work.

And they can't guilt you, because you can guilt them more back.

See, something positive CAN come from this!

i hate people driving my car too. in the 6 years ive had my car the only people other than myself to drive it are my parents (i think my dad drove it 3 times including the test drive when we bought it, and i think my mom drove it once) and i was forced to have one of my former roommates drive to a party because i was incapable of driving. now my car isn't in "pristine" condition or anything but i just hate that people have little to no consideration for things that aren't their own.

Sable eh? Fords are known for their power steering pump noise. If there is any air in the system at all it will make a nice loud noise until the system is purged correctly. Having the car off the ground and turning the steering wheel is enough to do it. Find out how she got the power steering system to leak and I bet you'll find out how air got in the system.

Wrong answer homeslice. His sister needs to learn to respect other people's property. She has caused a lot of damage in a very short amount of time. I can't imagine what her own car would look like. That kind of damage can seriously lower the value of a car.

Yea, thing is it didn't do that when I gave it to her.... and it was good when we replaced the pump... but now its doing it AGAIN

And Crimson... you don't want to see her car, its an 04 Accord, its been in I think 3 accidents so far so a few things have been replaced like the bumpers and the interior was so bad that you could not even see the floor....

My car has been in two accidents. In neither one was the car occupied or moving.

I hate hit and runs.

My car has not been in any accidents.

It is still falling apart.

My sister totaled my old Sable a few years ago. Not really her fault though, the brakes went out and she had to use a tree to stop it.

My truck came with so many scratchs that I don't worry about that. I wouldn't let someone I didn't trust borrow it though.

Why didn't she just rent a car/van?
2008-03-12, 2:07 AM #23
Who paid for the car/insurance? If you did, it's your own fault for not pointing those facts out to your parents. If they do, tough luck.

I was in an accident last friday. Slide off the road into a tree doing 10 mph. I hate the roads I have to take to work sometimes. Anyway, my car is a 95 Buick Century. Its a tank. Been in 2 accidents and still kicking. (The other I was overworked and fell asleep behind the wheel)

I told that idea to my parents... their response was we should have... but there isn't enough time you have to plan that in advance.... bs

And yea it is just a Sable but it seriously is in excellent condition and thats the point I'm trying to make.

Looks good for what it is... The only thing it really sounds like you should worry about is all that water in the trunk... cars get dings, but if its rotting from the inside out, you have a big issue.

^^ that and the power steering

I didn't see any rust on the body but the spare tire and jack had some surface rust.... and we made a new cover to go over the tire since the old one had mold and fell apart when we picked it up

I've had power steering issues before... Sadly it seems a new pump never fixes it like it should. Is it making the whine noise like the fluid isn't getting where it needs to be? Check the base of the steering column for leaks/damp crud. I'm not sure how ford builds their steering columns but I know right towards the bottom of it there is a troublesome area in many cars where you can hear when its bad. I'm not sure what part it is because I have never replaced it, but I could point it out.

It whines when the wheel is all the way to the right more so than the left. also it leaks almost right under where the reservoir is, there was a bit too much in there and we were able to take it out... but its still doing it. Also on the night of my b-day me and a few people were leaving dunkin donuts and the power steering cut out on me and no lights on the dash went on. lats time it went out on me a few lights came on but this time nothing.

Is the power steering pump electric or mechanical? If its leaking they probably either didn't clamp a hose and its giving under pressure, or (depending on how the pump is mounted) may not be tightend well enough to its mount. What size motor is in that thing? They have V6s correct?

You need to take it back to whoever replaced the pump. They should be able to fix the leak (possibly at no charge if it was a mistake during installation) and take care of the noises too. If what you're saying is that the noise went away after the pump was replaced and is now back again, it's probably because of the leak. It is possible for the system to suck air through a leak and cause the noises you're hearing.

Yea hopefully this weekend or the begining of next week I'm going to take it back to Tire Pros, they are the ones that replaced the pump. I have a feeling that same guy is going to be there and I'm sure he will remember me since I've been there before. heh last time I was there he was like Sable right? :neckbeard:
