"Hello Mr. Stranger. Nice to meet you. Say, I've always wanted to be an astronaut!"

The Gnome is impatient. Very impatient.

Whats that in the distance? Why, its puss-spewing death, of course!

"Ant-lions? What are those?"

The Gnome thinks the Vorts are bowing down...

"Whats all the hubbub, bub?"

"Gee, wasn't that fun?"

"This place smells funny."
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

"What do you mean, look behind you?"

"Check out my wheels, man!"

If only he actually sat still like that when the car was moving.

"Shall we go?"

"My thoughts exactally."

I think he wants me to jump it.

FINALLY. White Forest.

Maybe I can use this cart to lug this ******* around...
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

*drumroll, please*

TADA! Little Rocket Man.

Unfortunately, it failed to register the accomplishment. Looks like I'll have to do it again. :(
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

I completed it, as most of chat knows.

Don't do it.

The part where you have to drive in a car is a *****. Basically, you have to drive in a straight line or else the gnome clips out of the car. However, if you drive in a straight line, you will die by the helicopter. Especially if you drive slow.

It takes a few tries (By a few, I mean 20 reloads), until I figured out a better way is just to launch the gnome, drive up to it, get out, launch it again, drive up, get out, and so on.

EDIT: Now that I've read your post, you don't have to do it again. You just have to press activate when you put the gnome in the door. I forgot to do that on my first time, so I played through the rest of the game, hoping it was after the rocket launched and it was endgame. Still didn't do it, so I went back to that save point and closed the door, and it registered.

EDIT 2; You didn't have to take the gnome down the tunnels, you could have left it with Alex and the Vortigauns

I've got to try that. I totally missed the little dude on my first time through.

Maybe I'll try after I've beaten HL2 and Episode 1 again.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

There's an achievement for that too. Try beating HL2 Episode 1 firing only one bullet. And that bullet is used on a lock :P

I guess this "roaming gnome" is a homage to Amélie. Which I heard is based on a prank. I tried it but I don't have the patience to take it all the way through. So much for Valve's robust physics engine when the damn thing clips through the car.

However in Episode 2, I spawned a npc_floor_turret, turned it friendly and took it through most part of the game (carrying it and deploying it, making sure it watches my back). It was interesting.

This kinda reminds me of back in Half Life, I tried to make sure the friendly security guard NPCs stayed by side. Eventually, I got like 4 of them following me. Anyone else did that?

Did the same thing with the friendly turrets back in Nova Prospekt (or whatever its spelled) in HL2. Took all them to the teleportation room and never needed to fire a bullet.

Wait, don't you need to take down the Strider with RPGs at the very end of the game?

You can either fling stuff at them with the gravity gun (totally lame) or ram their legs with your car (totally awesome).

Wait, maybe I'm thinking of the stalkers.

That achievement was the biggest pain in th ***. I played through and got it on my second time around. Never quick saved and loaded so many times in a game before. I kept losing him with the car.
2008-03-18, 1:12 PM #14
No, you can use the rocket launcher, grenades, and other things. Anything that's a bullet though will ruin it.

wait... they added achievements to episode 1?

I don't know. I only played on the 360 version, I assumed it would be the same though on steam.
2008-03-18, 7:35 PM #18
360 version has achievements on HL2 and HL2EP1. Achievements were only added to the PC engine with the latest Orange Box releases.

Valve might add achievements to their older games (they claim they're going to port them to the newer engine, so who knows).

when did they say that? all i remember was a tech demo showing that HDR was a possibility with the source engine you know back in the day when the 9700Pro was the card to have

And they said they wouldn't put in in HL2 because the patch would be 3-4GB +.
