Big Dog Robot

I saw this on some blog and I thought it was so incredibly cool that I had to post it here. Watch for a while, it's worth it.

Thats got to be a two stroke motor. We've seen this before.

I think at one point we all agreed that the part where the guy kicks the robot is going to be the spark that starts the fire of war.

Darn, sorry for the old news, it popped up in my google reader today :( I just can't get over how creepy it is. It moves like it's alive, and I'm inclined to think of it as a dog rather than a robot. If they put a fakking head on it I would just shudder.

Wow, that's ****ing nuts.

I think that's a newer video, it shows off a lot more of its capabilities. Looks like they've really improved its ability to dynamically balance (the part where its on the ice was particularily impressive, as was the pile of cinderblocks).

Also, I didn't realize it could jump, that's pretty neat.

Yeah, the way it was able to right itself on the ice was part I had never seen. It really looked like it was a deer crossing a frozen river.

It's not old news, this is a new video, I certainly haven't seen it. It's quite amazing what they've done with it. That jump was amazing.

I've seen the dog before, but I think they spliced in some new footage for this video. Definitely crazy work there.

Forget the eventual zombie war, how do we prepare for the eventual robot war?

EMPs?

Well, I don't know so much how to stop them, but I do know what their target would be.

If I were a hive mind of killer robots bent on destroying the human race, I'd start off with the food supply.

I'd like to know more about the naked chick who walked by at 1:10 there.
DO NOT WANT.

Never.

They wouldn't give them out to people as dumb as you.
2008-03-17, 8:52 PM #27
Why would you want an AT-PT? They're basically a less equipped yet equally vulnerable AT-ST.
2008-03-17, 8:56 PM #28
Dude. Do you seriously have to ask why TE would choose something more stupid?

One thing I've noticed about the dog is that the one hooked up to a power cord in the lab does not suffer from the freakish need to sort of walk in place while the one with the motor does...

Now then, after seeing it hopping at what appeared to be a pretty high speed there, I think that if you could kill the engine noise and mount a gun on it, you'd have a really nifty robot weapon, especially in less than open areas. (KILLER ROBOT DEER)

wonder how much of it is mechanical and how much of it is electrical (the leg movement on the bigdog).

Pfft, it's easy to stop a killer robot. Just ask it what the highest number is it knows.

A gun is just the start. They currently determining the feasibility of mounting thermal sensing, acoustic projectile-detection, EMF locating, and UWB imaging equipment on the final chassis. They're not "close" yet, not until the 3rd or 4th gen can exhibit ladder climbing and high-speed running capabilities, but it's still very interesting to see the program progressing.

If you watched, they powered it with air in their testing facility and it was near silent.

Perhaps they can develop a way to power it with air in the field.

Oh yeah, and how do you propose they get the air to the field in the first place, Einstein?
:master::master::master:
2008-03-18, 9:35 AM #38
Well, theres a car that runs on air the uses a small gas engine to fill air tanks.

What if it could power on air like that, find a secluded place run a small motor and fillup, then repeat.

I'm not a ****ing robotomatologist.

Which means they moved the noise elsewhere to a compressor and the oil mist injector. Pressurised cylinders might be quiet, but I don't know how feasible they'd be in terms of weight added to bigdog per distance it can power as well as the overall bulkiness of such canisters potentially screwing with its design. Also I'm not so sure DARPA wants pressure canisters near troops if this thing is being designed with the idea that it'll carry heavy equipment for the soldiers through mountains in enemy territory.
I think they'd be better off working on a way to muffle the noise. Whether they directly use an internal combustion engine or use an air engine with a compressor.
2008-03-18, 9:42 AM #40
It's going to make noise and mess no matter what they do if the continue to use a two stroke engine

What they should do is make it NOISIER, BIGGER, AND SCARIER.

Then people won't want to **** with it.
