I need to learn how to sing...

I've always wanted to be able to sing and I can to a point... I'm not tone deaf and I can hit the right pitches, but my voice sounds like crap whenever I've recorded it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction towards making it sound better? I've joined a choir, which will give me practise at least. I sing tenor.

According to Jack Sparrow in PotC, eunuchs have wonderful singing voices. A little snip, and you're ready.

Yeah, singing tenor in a choir will really help you out a lot, be ready to hit those high notes [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]. Just go out there and have fun, don't care if you're afraid of what everyone will think, sing loudly, open your mouth, and you'll be fine.

yeah, most of singing is technicalities, you'll learn them in choir. (breath support, intonation, shape of vowels, placement of vowels, consonants, blending, head and chests voices and how to transition bewtween the two, how to warm up et cetera, et cetera, et cetera...and maybe eventually developing a vibrato). Get them down and you get singing down.
Have fun and sing out!! if you're going to make a mistake, make it a big one, that's what my chorus teacher always tells my class [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif].

Buy someone else's vocal chords and have them surgically implanted into your throat.

Hey now! I sing and I still have my balls. Basically my guitar teacher taught me little exercises to do with the guitar to do all the stuff someone else said, pitch recognition, vowel/consonants sounds, all that stuff. It seemed to work well... *shameless plug* check the soundclick.com link in my sig.

Just keep doing it. A lot.

I have to agree with that. I deliver pizzas. I've had a lot of time to practice...

If it sounds good in your head then get minimicrophones and stick them in your ears, that way you'll record what you hear.

Try and find a popular singing voice like yours, if you sing in a choir you're unlikely to have a gravelly voice so adjust what you're trying to sing to what you can sing.

I have a naturally good voice, but to make it sound VERY good I imitate the voice styles of famous vocalists, like Bono from U2, Mike from U2, Main SInger from Nickleback, and especially Nick Cave and Greenday.
See what I mean?

What you can do to improve your singing is... well... sing. Sing for a long time, stopping only to take a breath, and build up your stamina!

You can also practice by playing notes on a piano, then singing them; then by thinking of a note in your head, singing it, then check on the piano if you've got it.

There are also those who just aren't meant to sing. No matter how they practice, they'll always sound terrible.

I think if you really want to sing good, you have to take lessons with a private singing teacher. A choir is good for practice, but only a teacher, you see in private can point you to your personall difficulties.

Is Mike from U2, the Edge? or is it Bono's little brother, Mike-o?

yeah, I was pretty good before I took voice lessons but I improved 500% since I started taking lessons. individual attention definitley helps, but it also costs money. Chorus will get your basic things down and you can try to improve them on your own if you want to do it without the money ($25 a week for private lessons adds up, but it's worth it for me)
