5 dollars is not bad.

Funny, the game's most significant feature with going through portals is almost forgotten since Portal came out.

Prey was neat, even though it was stocked with Post-Half Life 2 Modern Game Syndrome symptoms. Good times.

I thought it was more "Post-Doom 3 MGS" in the case of Prey.

The Post-HL2 MGS doesn't really depend on the engine, just the release date. Among other things. Basically its symptoms are extremely repetitive level architecture (Prey's a good example, FEAR features it in its absolute horrendousness, STALKER, Bioshock...), short gameplay (5 hours or so), vaguely interesting gimmicks... etc.

Of course these things were present before HL2 but most of these new games seem to be influenced by HL2 specifically.

I think I need to write a Great FGR Terminology Guide somed- nah.

Hl2 seems to be a lot better at creative environments than most games.

id defend halflife 2 but no

although it definitely takesl onger than 5 hours

Note it's "Post-HL2 ... Syndrome" so HL2 isn't really a part of it. Even though in the episodes the architecture is rather repetitiveish :P

i think it may just be because hl2 is head and shoulders above most generally dull shooters. although i wont take any guff about stalker hat game was sweet, but your right mostly, even big hype titles like halo 3 fall into that category, although cod4 is an awesome shooter

5 dollars, jesus christ.
2008-03-29, 1:33 PM #16
Just play the demo. All the neat portal stuff is in the first half hour of the game.
2008-03-29, 1:42 PM #17
Dude what the **** are you talking about sometimes?

Repetative Architecture in FEAR? NO ****. HALF THE GAME TAKES PLACE IN A AN OFFICE BUILDING.

Prey takes place in a planet sized spaceship. THINGS ARE GOING TO MATCH AND LOOK THE SAME.

its still repetitive and bland though rob.

doom 3 was pretty much one dark industrial complex with a few colourful areas, it was a bore to trudge through.
2008-03-29, 1:50 PM #20
lol the original halo takes place in loads of different locations, grassy fields and grey corridors all around the place`
2008-03-29, 1:51 PM #21
i wasn't much a fan of Prey, it starts off kinda cool but gets old really fast.

You can't mention how it gets old really fast because it was meant to be that way! [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/garosaon/emot-burger.gif]

The GAMEPLAY does get old.

Which has NOTHING to do with the ARCHITECTURE which is SPOT ON
2008-03-29, 2:05 PM #24
"Another Canyon Oasis level? Didn't they get old years ago?"
"Yes!"
"So it's another Deathmatch CO with mostly the same archi as before.."
"The gameplay most certainly is old, but the archi is spot on for Canyon Oasis! It's just GRRRRRRE-"

I never said the levels weren't spot on for offices or alien spacecraft. Dunno about the latter, though... they're still bland, which combined with similarly bland and repetitive gameplay does not a new innovative game make, hmmm? Definitely Post-HL2 Modern Game Syndrome material.

OFFICES ARE BLAND. Dude. Seriously.

Listen to yourself. You sound like an idiot.
2008-03-29, 2:12 PM #26
*scratches his head*

I really ought to read "The Absolute Internet Guide to Rob and according to Rob" someday and just find out how can anyone make a point like "OFFICES ARE BLAND!" from "You know, it'd be great if games these days had different kinds of levels instead of the same one over and over again".

... or more properly, "why". Or maybe that's peasy.

you know what rob i hate to agree with the finn but its true, just because offices are bland doesnt mean the game has to be bland, they could have had a level where they visit the WWE or maybe something crazy and supernatural
2008-03-29, 2:27 PM #28
Offices being bland is not what is in question, rather the choice to have the game set almost entirely in offices.

Office architecture IS BLAND. It's entirely stupid to expect to walk into an office building in a game and expect anything but bland architecture.

You can't accuse games of bland architecture when they're EMULATING WHAT ALREADY EXISTS, OR SHOULD BE CONSTANT.
2008-03-29, 2:46 PM #30
It's still amazing how you still don't get it. Or refuse to get it. Or refuse to want to get it. Heh.

No ****ing ****. No one disagrees with you. What we're saying is that they should have chosen to have the game take place SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN JUST OFFICE BUILDINGS, BECAUSE OFFICE BUILDINGS ARE BORING.

LIKE ON THE MOON

It's a game which is SEMI-GROUNDED IN REALITY. REALISTIC LOCATIONS.

Hey! Minesweeper is bland because it takes place in a minefield that looks the same as the last one!

Guitar Hero is bland because all the levels are music venues!

And I don't understand how you could call the environments of Bioshock bland because they're repetative. Mostly because DURR, they aren't. And DURR, UNDER WATER CITY WHAT DID YOU EXPECT, A VISIT TO THE MOON?

Well, the link is there and we have had some good discussion. Maybe it's time for it to end if we can't keep it civil.
