MotS - can't hear music
2008-03-31, 3:01 AM #1
Mysteries of the Sith - cannot hear music. All other sound effects are fine.

Tried reinstalling (both standard and complete installs). Tried turning on/off 3D sound. Tried dxdiag - all tests successful. Tried playing a regular audio CD - no problem. Tried Jedi Knight - everything works fine (both effects and music).

Sigh. Any help please? These old games are driving me up the wall. I spend more time ****ing about with 'em than playing 'em.

Do you have the original disk?

Did you move the no cd file in the resource folder? (This would cause it, if you did)

I have the original disc, and its in the drive.

I haven't moved any files.

Inside the resource folder is this file - JKMsndLO.goo

Also, I tried turning off all sound excelleration inside dxdiag. Still no joy.

Regards, Robert.

PS: I've never owned a console, but I'm beginning to see their appeal.

To be fair, you're installing a decade old game.

Are you on XP or Vista?

Coming to think of it, I actually have the same problem with MotS... I'm on XP. But on my previous install of XP it worked just fine. :psyduck:

That's very interesting!

btw, I'm on XP but after having pulled most of my hair out yesterday I then installed it on a Pentium3 win98 box. But still no joy on that box either!!

Strange thing is do you know the game "outcast" - if you run it on a fast machine it complains about some things like no cd tracks to play on disc. But if you run it on a slower machine (P3 seems ok) it doesn't complain.

Maybe MotS is like this too, but my P3 machine is still too fast for it to do the cd music stuff properly?

Also, I tried ensuring that the Sith CD (MotS) was drive letter D: and that no other drive letters were after that (like flash drives, and other stuff.) No luck there unfortunately.

Thanks guys for trying. Kinda be interesting to see what the tech glitch is with this though.

hehe, that's drive letter d, not some picture of a face who's had his penis removed with a blunt saw.

Hmmm, I think I know why I have no music. I think last time I installed the game, I did it from a backup ISO image I keep on my external HD. (I make iso copies of a lot of original discs, in case they get scratched etc.) This would explain why it can't access the audio. I'll reinstall from the CD and see if it works.

I know this isn't helping you, I'm just talking to myself haha. Least I can do is let you know if I can get it to work.

I wonder if it's something to do with what version of Direct X you have installed? On my XP box, I have version 9.0c I think. On my Win98 its 9.0a.

When you install MotS, it offers to install verion 5 - that's quite an old version really. But maybe there's something in the later versions of DirectX that is messing up the audio somehow?

Just a thought - I'm not very technically minded about these things.

DirectX is about graphics, right? I didn't think it had anything to do with audio. I might be wrong though.

In any case, all it needs to do is play cd audio tracks, it's not a complicated thing.

Open up your favorite cd playing program with the MOTS CD in the drive. There should be a number of tracks. Skip the first one or two as they are the data tracks (where the game is). The rest should be the actual ingame music. If it won't play there then I'd say your disc is borked or something.

no, check out this - in the start run thingy on xp/whatever, type in -

dxdiag

basically run microslop's directx tester proggy called dxdiag

inside there, there's a whole ton of crap that can go **** up with directx, including audio and music.

There's a load of ".SAN" files in a video folder. Can't really see any other files that could be audio stuff.

Can't open them b/c my cd player doesn't recognise them as audio tracks.

The san files are the in-game cinematics. The music files are CD audio tracks which are NOT computer files because all of the computer files for the game are on track 1 of the cd. Try popping the CD into a CD player or a program like Windows Media Player and go to track 2 to see if any music will play.

ok i tried this. JK = no probs, media player 9 sees 7 audio tracks and plays them great. MotS on the other hand can't see any audio tracks.

please can some kind dude just double-check that MotS has these audio tracks on them that any regular cd player can see. if they're there, then i guess my brand new shiny legal cd is broken somehow - maybe it was a pirate - but it's weird cos it was inside a double pack with JK which works great with the audio.

SavageX beat me to it.

The audio for Jedi Knight and MotS are CD audio tracks. It is not possible to use them with a no CD crack because the only way JK/MotS can play them is to tell the CD drive to start jamming! So you sorta need the CD for that. [Edit: Whoops, you're not using a crack... hrm.]

On the flip side, with a no CD crack you can stick ANY audio CD in your cd drive and THEORETICALLY it should play (it might not... depends how JK/MotS detects the CD drive... with a no-CD crack CD tracks might not work at all...).

Also as a side note no harm is incurred by trying to install an old version of DirectX when you have a new one. The DirectX installer simply detects the newer version and will exit without doing anything.

Try your MotS CD in an audio player (WiMP or Winamp will work fine). If it works there then it should work ingame.

If it's not working ingame make sure it's the same drive letter you installed MotS from. If not, change it in the registry (HKLM\Software\Lucasarts etc.. might be under HKCU).

Quick reply - double-checked MotS CD inside a regular CD player (not in my PC), and it says "no audio data".

The kinda official looking number on the CD is -

3000007.103.UK

I wonder if the UK versions got the audio data accidentally left out? Or some weird copyright problem existed and they had to leave the music off the disc? Or I just got unlucky and the CD I got is a badly pressed pirate?

Just tried, I have the exact same version as you 3000007.103.UK and the tracks play fine in Windows Media Player. This is on Vista.

Haven't tried in-game though.

Thanks for checking it out. I guess I must have a bootleg. Damn it.

Wouldn't have thought so, bootlegs (especially from 8 years ago) aren't usually that real looking.

I'm guessing it wouldn't play in a normal CD player because the first track is data rather than audio.

Get a program such as dbpoweramp and try ripping the audio tracks. Perhaps they're there but not just playing??

I actually bought it about 3 months ago from ebay, it was shrink-wrapped but I guess that means little really. But all 3 CDs look authentic, but maybe they're well made pirates. Weird how the other 2 discs (JK cds 1 and 2) play audio fine though.

Anyway, I DL'd dbpoweramp and tried the cd ripper thing, but it kept telling me to insert an audio cd in the drive when there was the MotS cd in the drive. I guess it couldn't see any audio tracks?
2008-03-31, 4:06 PM #23
Try WinAmp or iTunes for ripping maybe. With both JK and MotS for me when I insert the CD music players display the tracks.

i tried winamp, no luck. i'm now fairly sure the cd is broken somehow - probably a bootleg. I'll have to buy it again, but ask ebay seller beforehand if it plays the audio properly. annoying, cos the one I bought was new/sealed and wasn't cheap.
