Is anyone else here going to enter into the Raidohead contest that iTunes is having? For those of you in the dark, you can download (for .99 a track obviously) the 5 seperate tracks from the Radiohead song Nude, and they want people to remix the song. Seems worth the 5 dollars to me, so I'm going to give it a go, if only to get some experience in sound editing.
Think while it's still legal.

So you pay for a song and they want you to remix it.

Sounds like a great plan that will end up great success.

Seriously. I don't want to sound like a crazy NIN fan, and Radiohead is actually one of my favorite bands, but they really did this wrong. A true fan likely donated for the album when it came out, then discovered it was coming out on CD so they paid for it again. Now the band is expecting them to pay -again- so they can remix it? It just doesn't seem right.

I actually thought this was an April Fools prank when I heard about it, couldn't believe it when I found out it was true.

If you don't know what you're doing, wouldn't it be smarter to try remixing something you don't have to pay for?

I'm gonna work a hell of a lot longer and harder on something that I paid for.

You'd be paying for the separate tracks of the song. It's not a huge amount, and the only people who would have a reason to buy the tracks are people who intend to remix them. You can listen to the finished remixes for free. How is this in any way unreasonable? Are the separate tracks normally available free of charge?

I don't think this is too unreasonable. Anyone who pays for this is doing it so they can remix it for the contest. Essentially it's like an application fee for the contest I guess. It's not like you're going to pay a dollar because you want to listen to just the lead guitar track or something.

that is outrageous. I've never heard of a band charging for a remix kit.

i've never heard of a band OFFERING a remix kit.

Speaking as a remixer of 6 years or so, it's not terribly uncommon--I've seen remix kits by NIN, Beastie Boys, Fort Minor, just off the top of my head...obviously, commercial remixers are going to be paying large sums of money in exchange for studio tracks, but "fan remix contest" packs have always been free.

Radiohead is just saying "as a community project, we're going to fart in all your faces! And you're going to LIKE it!"

How dare they charge $6 for a remix kit after letting me choose my own price for the album! I deserve everything for FREE!

(in response to people asking if bands ever release multi-tracks for free)

http://remix.nin.com/

Multi-tracks for all of the songs on Year Zero, a couple off With Teeth, and a few of the Ghosts tracks (and a couple of Saul Williams'). Free.

NIN is more likely the exception rather than the rule. They offered all of Ghosts, a four disc album, for $5. Common.

Not taking, sorry. The whole "fan remix contest" thing is a relatively new (almost web 2.0) phenomenon, so there's not a WHOLE lot to compare it to, but this is absolutely the first time I've seen a band charging fans to participate. I know you guys are convinced there's nothing wrong with it, and obviously they can charge whatever they want for their own music. But to the remixing community, it's a dick move.

Agreed. Very. Pay to remix? Hm.. I'll stick with remixing bands off acidplanet.com thank you.
Mmmm.

Thrawn knows what he's talking about guys. Getting charged to be able to remix something is pretty ****ing ridiculous.

But radiohead can get away with it because they're combined with apple, and anytime apple overcharges for something people like it for some reason.

There goes my intent to grab some more radiohead albums.

And it's not just that. What do you get? Nothing out of it. They get all rights to your stuff, and you win.. nothing? Oh, wait, Radiohead gets to listen to your song. My bad.

Some lame-*** remix competition this is. Not even going to bother.
Mmmm.
