FWD is much better in snow than rear, and 4WD isn't that much better in snow anyway. Tons of people here think they're invincible with their 4WD SUVs and then bam, 5 miles later they're off the side of the road stuck.

4WD is great for accelerating but it won't do **** for breaking. It's simple physics. The effects are probably compounded by the fact that most 4WD vehicles are large and have a lot of mass, increasing their momentum.

I've heard sand is used in some places. Here they use salt, which makes a lot more sense because it actually melts ice. There's also a salt mine here though, so I've always wondered if they use it because it's cheap and more effective.

Is sand all that common?

Sand here mostly. They always sand the roads after the snowstorms passed and we don't need it. Then they clean it off before it snows again. >_>

They use salt everywhere I've ever been, but I think the idea behind sand is that it gives more traction. So instead of melting all the snow, and then having it freeze at night, it just gives you more traction when you're trying to drive.

Sand is also much better for the environment. I live in a city surrounded by lakes, so they try to use as little salt as possible to reduce salt run-off into them.

But don't forget that accelerating includes steering. Just gotta know your limitations and be careful.

I wish we had snow here...i'd rather have snow and cold than just plain cold. Warm would be better than both, though, hah.
