Virus or did I break it?

Recently my computer has been freaking out and opening about 100 webpages for no reason. What's going on? I've had some people tell me its a virus and others that say its just a system glitch and that all computers do it. What do y'all think it is?

Thanks so much!

(I'm a friend of Sugarless! So If you think I'm dumb just know that your insulting her as well... :P )

It's definitely a virus or adware.

Download and install Avira AntiVir, as well as Ad-Aware it should remove whatever's there.

You say that as if we wouldn't insult sugarless by calling her dumb. :ninja:

Whoever said that all computers have that sort of glitch is on crack.

It's true
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Restart in safe mode (the easiest way to do this, is when the windows xp really low resolution screen comes up, while it's loading windows, and the loading bar is going, wait about halfway through that then hard reset your computer. Once you restart it'll ask you if you want to go into safe mode, safe mode w/ networking etc. Choose safe mode w/ networking) AFTER installing adaware and spybot. Run those two items before you restart (especially as spybot will run a first time check upon restart) and then after you're in safe mode, use housecall.

Good luck.

I would not recommend restarting your computer while the hard drive is being accessed. Instead, turn it on and repeatedly press the F8 button until the screen where you select safe mode comes up.

It's not always the f8 button, chances are she's got a prefab and there's no real way to tell except mashing buttons, and it's what I've always done :\

But theoretically, yes, it could be bad.

Reformat, install Windows Vista, enable automatic updates, quit running those cute_puppies.scr and happy_holidays.exe files you get in your email

I have to agree with this. In my 3 year tenure has a helpdesk technician, 95% of "OMG why is my computer so whack???" have been the cause of people downloading stupid **** onto their machines. Remember kids, when it comes to surfing the internet,

JUST. CLICK. NO!

I too agree. However in a more polite manner.

I disagree. I find when dealing with viruses/adware it's best to completely disconnect from the internet, or while your program is scanning, the virus/adware is just pulling more stuff off some server and dumping it on your box.

I don't see any advantage to booting with networking. You should already have downloaded/installed any programs you're going to use.

Thanks a bunch!

And I make it a point not to open the cute_puppies.scr and happy_holidays.exe. I may be a girl on a computer, but even I'm not that dumb. :D

It's a Windows thing not a computer thing, so F8 is the only button for it.

Rickrolls don't bother me, unless it's one where you have to click 10000 times, but even then I don't make a big deal out of it.

I actually laugh when I get YouTube Rickrolled.

Browser hijacking is bad though.

Normally I don't do stuff like that, but if you didn't realize that that would be something bad before you clicked it, you richly deserved the three extra key strokes it took to close it. Also for the use of "srsly".

*grins smugly*

Practically though, I was demonstrating that people often click on bad links more often than they think.
2008-04-09, 9:29 AM #31
You're an idiot.

I have to click on links to make sure they're okay for massassi. I knew it probably was going to be something bad, but not something I thought i was going to have to kill firefox for. Its not funny or ****ing proving anything. Do it again and you're banned a lot longer than one night.

Of course not. The mods are never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down...

I will admit that I actually kind of...like the song.

But no one rickrolls me any more.

I blame Bush and global warming.

Am I the only one that likes it?
