Cna someone break this down into steps so i have a clue whats going on, i just can't seem to get the right answer.

f(x)=-(3/x^4)-ln(x)

f'(x)= 12x^-5-x^-1

thanks for the help its an easy question and one i should be albe to do but can't
2008-04-20, 1:57 PM #2
-(3/x^4) can be written -3(x^-4), the derivative of which by the basic rule is -3(-4x^-5) by multiplying by the exponent and subracting one from that exponent. That simplifies to 12x^-5. And the derivative of lnx is 1/x (also written x^-1), that's something you memorize unless you want to take forever to do a problem.

(3/x^4) can be re-written as 3(x^-4). Use power rule. Derivative of ln(x) is 1/x which can also be written as (x^-1)

Ah yeah, it's called the power rule. Well, I'm just glad I actually know some math still.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I got a spam e-mail at some point with the same title as this thread.

now can someone explain where this 3 and the 2 in this come from

f(x) = e^3x.Cos(2x)

my answer f'(x) = e^3x.cos(2x)-e^3x.sin(2x)
should be f'(x) = 3 e^3x.cos(2x)- 2 e^3x.sin(2x)

ahh im just being a thicko sorted now

Chain Rule.

Derivative of e^(3x), is e^(3x) times the derivate of whatever is inside the parenthesis. In this case it is derivative of 3x, which is 3.

Same with the derivative of Cos(2x), which is (-sin(2x))(derivative of 2x).

And this is why I'll never be a math teacher.

Related fact: Obese people have to be cooked slowly in the oven at the crematorium. Otherwise, you risk overheating and ruining your crematorium's oven.

I don't have the statistics. My dad runs a funeral home and had a crematorium installed. Thats actually part of the training for using it. :p

There's actually been a lot of problems with people being too big to fit through the oven door. It costs an f'load to get the door resized, too.

The one on the right looks skinny.

Relatively speaking.

Only on Massassi can we go from calculus to fat people to crematoriums.
