Can someone recommend me a good microphone for some recording?

I'm looking for something that can record anything pretty well.

I plan on using it with my vocoder.

I remember someone here in the forums records music, but I can't really remember...Spook maybe?

You would be thinking of Seb. For general all-purpose stuff, I'd go with an SM 57 or 58 (the 58 is the same as the 57 but with a different grille). No idea what that costs, though.

Yeah I always hear the SM57 is good for general purpose.

Get the SM58 for vocals. Different presence peak and built-in pop filter will be more practical. The SM57 is more of a general purpose instrument microphone.

You can use the 57 for a vocal mic, and it works great for some singers, but they have to have impeccable mic technique or there will be mad pops and hisses. Get the 58, it's the failsafe. Everyone uses it, you have heard it a million times before, even on some records.

Don't be afraid of cheap Chinese copies. Some of them are sonic-ally the same. Just do your research.

It also cuts out the costs of a phantom power source that a condenser would require.

Is the difference of sound really different between the 57 an 58? Shouldn't the 57 work fine with the Shure A2WSBK Windscreen as well Spook?
I plan on doing some vocals, but more alto saxophone.

if this can give you some inspiration

the 58 is good for vocals. for alto i'd go for a clip-on condenser, but that won't work as well for vocals.

Yeah the sound is different, but not worse. I have never used a windscreen on a 57 because the only vocalists I ever used it on had perfect mic technique, or wanted to hear the hisses and pops. I imagine it would work fine.

Seb is right on the alto.
