This is really just to prove CM wrong, but have you ever played through the storyline of a GTA game?

Yes. Even though GTA:SA is pretty much the only one with a story to any extent.

The poll should have been "Do you play GTA for the storyline" if you were intent on doing that.

Yeah.

Mostly with GTA 3 and GTA: VC, though.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Played through and beat each game past GTAIII (although not 100% like my brother)

Yeah, but only the 3D ones. Never bothered going for 100% on any of them, though.

Honestly I've never found too much fun in the storyline, the real fun for me is just messing around, shooting at things, stealing cars, and running from the police. I nearly completed GTAIII, but there was a part in that game toward the end that I kept failing on so I never beat it. In VC and SA I barely did anything with the storylines.

I think Vice City had the best "Story". There were a few cutscenes in that one that had me laughing harder than I do at most movies.

I play through the story and the missions because I enjoy them. I also have just as much fun tearing through the city/cities.

SA had such an awesome story, and awesome voice acting. I finished all the way through to make sure I get every drop of David Cross and Sammy L.

Played through GTA3, most or all of Vice City, and I lost interest in SA when they forced me to fly planes, but I did play a good chunk of that one.

The proper question should be
With or Without cheats?

I eventually got through the plane missions in SA. It takes a bit of patience to learn them, and turning off flying with the mouse (whoever coded that should be shot, the mouse axis control ACCELERATION, not direction or velocity as one would expect, making it near impossible to control).

I stopped on SA when it wants you to take back gang territories near the end. I'm not sure how much it wants me to do, it's too easy to get the police shooting at me while I'm trying to start a gang war, and some of the other gangs' territories have no gang members in them so I can't capture the territory! Plus every so often it forces you to go defend a territory or else you lose it, but it seems to give you a generous length of time to get there, but there are very few vehicles on the streets at that point in the game so it's annoying trying to get around anywhere.

I didn't own a PS2 or an Xbox, so no. Using my friend's system, I did get about halfway through 3 and SA.

Keep bikes around--if you have your skills all the way up, and know how to superhop, you can cross the SA map in less than 5 minutes.

All of my garages have at least one NRG in them ;)

Also, flying is a lot easier when you have a joystick

I always max out bicycle at the start of a fresh game, because you can bunny hop over houses.
