He'll be a god in jail, get out in 3 months, then play in some gangster movies.

Talk about publicity.

Wow. Thats kinda of extreme
2008-04-24, 5:17 PM #8
Not really.

I'm totally in favor of extreme penalties for stuff like this. I mean there are the laws every one breaks, and stupid laws some people break, then there is stuff like paying your taxes. Just do it. You don't do it, and it should be enforced with stiffer penalties because you shouldn't do it. So... no one should be getting the penalty.

But yea, what dj said. Which is what is lame about the situation.

"
Before the sentencing, the actor asked the court to show mercy and offered three checks totaling $5 million as a gesture of good will.
Federal prosecutors diverted the checks to the U.S. Treasury -- which accepted the payment -- but it wasn't enough.
"It's essentially a down payment, but a fraction of what he owes," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Scotland Morris."

Basically, he owed the government MILLIONS in back taxes. Not so extreme when you think about that.

Hmm... what jail is he in again?

Also, the headline should really read, "IRS Makes Example of Snipes."

Load of crap, child molesters get 5 years, you can't tell me a tax fraudster is 3/5ths as bad as a child molester. He should have to pay all back taxes, interest, and penalties, and perhaps probation or something, but not jail time. VICTIMLESS CRIMES shouldn't have jail time. This is not like enron where zillions of people lost their retirement money and investments. 5-10 million in back taxes is nothing to the government.
2008-04-24, 7:35 PM #12
40% of your income tax last year went to the military. I totally understand people not wanting to pay.

Why wouldn't he just pay his damned taxes? It seems like such a stupid thing to go to jail over. Unless an accountant screwed him without him knowing, or something.

Ignoring the rest of the thread, this caught my eye. That's not a good argument. You still have to pay, if you disagree with what it's being used for, that's what voting is for.

Perhaps that says more about sentencing for child molestors than it does about tax evasion sentences. The victims of this are everyone as a whole; he makes a lot of money and enjoys the same government services you do, but he doesn't pay his fair share and therefore lives an even more lavish life at your expense. Just because he's taken tiny amounts from a lot of people doesn't make it any more victimless. Having said that, if the jury's verdict was that he was the victim of crappy tax advisors and he wasn't actively trying to fleece the government then he really ought not to be imprisoned.

PS, how do you guys pay your taxes? They're automatically deducted from your wages for most employees in the UK. It's the PAYE system. Do you have to declare your earnings each year and do the calculations and hope/the government trusts that you've got them right when you pay them?
2008-04-24, 8:01 PM #18
^^ Both. You get pay deductions every paycheck and then when it comes time to file, you tally up how much you made and then if you make enough, you pay more taxes. I ****ing hate it with a passion. You get taxed once then you get taxed again. :argh:

I wouldn't completely avoid taxes, but you're damn right I would exploit every loophole I could find in the tax system if I made his kind of loot.

I do, but the wording's important.

If nobody paid their taxes, what would the government do? Declare a military state and ration everyone off? Sometimes it's within the message being sent that the purpose lies.

However most of the time it's just greed.

Well, yeah, but the whole idea of our system is that it should never be able to come to that. It shouldn't ever be even close to necessary.

I'll admit, I'm greedy. But I firmly believe that the US government is taxing its citizens too much. There is soooooooooooo much bloat and useless spending. ****, sometimes millions are just lost. Millions of your $$ lost somewhere in the government.

Actually 3 years is a slap on the wrist. White men have gone to prison for life for the same infraction.

I was kinda waiting for one of these...

Expect claims that it's unconstitutional and that it's a form of extortion with the threat of imprisonment. My opinion of these guys is rather coloured by most of them being "Captain Silverspoons" and in particular one Kent Hovind.

This entire issue is far too ironic to post on here. I mean you have libs that want the rich taxed out of their butt hole complaining at the penalty this rich man got for evading paying taxes and conservatives praising the jailing of a man that didn't pay his excessive tax. To be fair, the conservatives probably still fault him for breaking the law while acknowledging that taxes ARE out of control but still...

the argument i see about the income taxes being illegal is that the 16th amendment was never "legally ratified." i havent been able to find the evidence to support this argument though.

the other one is that the 16th amendment didnt add any new taxation powers, and as written only requires income tax from foreigners working in the us or us citizens workng outside the us.

* shrug* i dont care either way. i'll jsut do what i have to to avoid going to jail.

You Americans are way too obsessed over your taxes.

Also, 3 years is a bit excessive... but hey, have you taken a look at his face lately? Wow sirs, you are rolling like WHEELS.

Hahahaha, of all the names I've used to refer to people I think it's hilarious that "captain silverspoon" is the only one to really enter the massassi lexicon

You would think somebody like Wesley Snipes would have had enough left even if he had paid all that he should have. But I guess it's true that the more you have the more you want, with no limits.

Maybe he will indeed do a gangster/prison movie next, then.
