Dell UK mistake (and post your keyboard)
2008-05-01, 8:09 AM #1
It seems Dell screwed up the layout on the UK version of the Vostro 1310 keyboard:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/01/dells-vostro-keyboads-putting-the-hurt-on-uk-touch-typists/

The left shift key is longer than it should be, resulting in the buttom row of letters being off by one, basically making touch typing impossible.

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this, but up until now I don't think I realized how different the UK keyboard layout is from the US one. I might have seen a picture before and noted the weird shaped enter key, but there are a number of other differences that I hadn't realized.

So, talk about Dell's massive mistake, or post a picture of your keyboard. Bonus points if it's not the US layout.

You know, now all those "a shame keyboards don't have a proper Return key anymore" posts on various places make sense. A bit. Whatever.

The differences seem to be that we have a small L-shift and backslash next to it and you have a small enter key with backslash above it. Other than that it's just the @ and " keys which are swapped.
Foreign language keyboards are a lot worse, especially if they don't use the same alphabet.

The £ key isn't shift+3 on a US keyboard, I know that much.

For some reason stickam likes to think I have a US keyboard and is mapped accordingly. Does my nut in.
nope.

I use the Saitek Eclispe too. I think the newer versions let you change LED backcolor between red-green-blue but mine is the older blue only version.

ugh. I hate monster enter keys. I refuse to use any keyboard that has one.

Yeah. That Apple keyboard is yet another instance where Apple sacrificed usability for looks.

I have a Logitech Wave, it's excellent. It's got ergonomic curves in three dimensions, making it comfortable without being awkward like traditional ergonomic keyboards.

Actually, I find it quite comfortable, and I like the lower height to the keys. It makes typing much faster and more fluid, I find.

Look closer. The first key after the LSHIFT on the UK layout is \, and \ is where Z should be (LSHIFT should be one key width smaller).

2008-05-01, 5:26 PM #20
That's strange. For me, there's a reason I don't type on a surface that's completely uniform and solid. Regular keyboard keys absorb the force, for lack of better terms, of my fingers each time I type. Those Apple keyboards feel like pecking away at a smooth surface, I can "feel" the shock of every time I press down.

On the plus side, those Apple keyboards are really easy to clean.

and the enter and backslash are different.... and it's called the "internet navigator"

so basically the same thing

Those enter keys are weird.

Yeah, I didn't realise they were noticeably different. I always thought it was only a few keys.

Who the hell needs a giant shift key like that, anyway?

my keyboard is very unique-- it is ancient and as such i have bought more of them on ebay in case this one ever dies.
it seems that modern keyboards have trended towards either obnoxious laptop keys (like mac) or black keys, which i dont like for readability. Or worse yet, they have huge bezels with unnecessary "media keys" and other stupid things.

I use my media keys to globally control my music when it's playing, I also like the soft-touch palm rest. :colbert:

Most extra keys are useless, though.

Mine. I don't even own a Dell, got this for free from work. They're actually pretty decent keyboards, and I really like the small footprint/lack of unnecessary keys.

browser and email keys are useful too i also have some of the normally useless keys on mine configured to load stuff i use

the only truly useless parts of my keyboard is the stupid scroll wheel on the left side and the "f-lock" button that toggles the F keys between their proper function and a set of useless functions most of which are covered by ctrl+*

one of the reasons, a small one but a good one, i picked a dell laptop was due to the keyboard and it's layout. i really like it. proper shift key, backspace key and the position of the quotes and slashes are all in their proper places and sizes.
2008-05-02, 9:16 PM #36
I've been using one of these for a while now, but the backlight has started to make an irritating buzzing noise. Makes it kind of hard to see the keys, especially in a dark room.

Har, I'm clever. :downs:

I use some cheap wireless keyboard/mouse combo I picked up from wal-mart for about 15 bucks. Looking to replace it since the mouse eats through batteries like a fat guy eats a box of donuts.

Just in case anyone is interested or affected by the Dell thing, looks like they'll be replacing the keyboards:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/08/dell-to-replace-all-european-vostro-1310-and-1510-keyboards/

Still baffles me that they made the mistake in the first place.
