Spook: When you guys go camping do you pack up your trash or do you throw it in the campfire? Er. When you dismantle a base do you detonate the mines or do you retrieve them? A lot of explosives become less stable as they age, which is a large part of the risk with old mines. I know you guys keep pretty damn accurate maps but given the nature of the beast I think it would be pretty easy to miss a couple.

I am not an engineer of any sort, so my first hand experience is limited to claymores and plastic. However, having had this same conversation with those who do lay the mines, I am under the impression that not only do we keep maps, but I am told that, like Roach said, almost all of our mines can be operator detonated. (run on sentence) That, combined with our techniques and machinery for clearing minefields, it is supposed to be virtually failsafe.

And I do pack out all my trash thank you very much. I am and Eagle Scout.

No trace camping. :colbert:

Now this is assuming that you have the opportunity to properly dismantle a base and aren't kanked by some ******* politician who wants votes.

I must say that upon first reading the article and some people's concerns here with the mines, I agreed. However, after reading what Spook had to say, and understanding how these mines work, I am not against the use of these mines. I mean, if we're not dropping them around in public places and are typically using them as defense mechanisms then we're doing no wrong in this. It's a freaking war for crying out loud.
