I decided to sell my car when gas prices hit $4.00, which I predict will be at the beginning of next month.

Instead I will begin using the bus, my bicycle, and perhaps purchase a motorcycle in its place for better mileage. And of course walk.

Anyways, post what gas prices are around you today. Complain, or share some insight, whatever.

$4+ here. We're always 10 - 15% higher than the nation.

I'm getting a NEW car pretty soon.

Your mom is buying you another new car? Didn't she just get one for you two years ago?

1.27900 (Canadian dollars per litre) = 4.88403104 U.S. dollars per US gallon

That's how much gas was on my way to work this morning.

Public transit here blows ***, and my house is equidistant from school and work. When I finish school I'd like to just live close to wherever I end up working and bike there, screw this driving bull****.

WTF, I must've made some stupid mistake, because I got:
1.529 Euros per litre = 8.92261833 U.S. dollars per US gallon

But google agrees with me.

So quit yer whining!
Sorry for the lousy German

I pay £1.20 / litre for diesel. That's lots.
2008-05-15, 2:24 PM #10
I paid $5.80 a gallon yesterday for premium. Of course our premium is better than yours, maybe that counts for something.

My car is a bit of a guzzler, too, if I'm doing the conversion properly I get about 13 miles per gallon.

Nope, Europe has it way worse than the US or Canada. Always has.

I love driving far too much to be willing to start bussing/biking/walking on a daily basis.

Gas is going to have to go up a LOT more before I make any big changes.

But that doesn't really take into account the standard of living in the UK and the US. I think when that's factored in its more like $5/6 dollars per gallon - still a lot, but still.

Huh? Impi's German. And Americans and Western Europeans generally have the same standards of living. I'm not sure what you're trying to say; I don't think standard of living is the phrase you mean.

Oops. >_> For some reason I just jumped to the UK because I'm moving there the upcoming year, I forgot they don't even use the Euro. Blarg, I dunno. I read an article on CNN a while ago that compared gas prices around the world and remember it being much lower in European countries than $8.92 because they took into account comparable prices of other things in those countries.

if you are saying most other goods in europe and the UK are cheaper than the US, that's complete bull...

we pay more for fuel, electronics, food, alcohol, clothes...basically everything.

electronics wise, I mostly find I pay in £ what it costs in $$...

Oh yeah, Europe gets screwed hardcore when it comes to electronics prices.

Only justification I can think of for gas prices is you guys probably aren't covering the distances we have to here on a daily basis. I have no idea if that balances it out or not, though.

The best, easily available comparison is probably GDP at PPP per capita.
GDP stands for gross domestic product - the total value of goods produced and services performed by a country for that year.
PPP stands for purchasing power parity which is a measure of the cost of living within a country to help with these comparisons. The figures used are given in "International dollars" which are valued at the same value as the US dollar back in 1990.

For 2007, the IMF and the CIA give similar figures:

USA: $45,845
Canada: $38,435
Finland: $35,280
UK: $35,134
Germany: $34,181

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita

It seems to me that the average US citizen should have significantly more spending power than those of us in Europe who are also taxed more than you.

It's over $2NZ per litre here.

That's equivalent to $5.77US per gallon.

You might consider staying off the roads. I kind of planned on digging a handlebar into your car real hard as I go by.
