Tea!
2008-05-16, 7:16 AM #1
Any tea drinkers in here? I recently became one. I'm not a morning person at all, so every summer when I start working full time getting up early nearly kills me. Last summer I was having an energy drink every morning, but it was wreaking havoc on my digestive system. Coffee seems to have a similar effect on me. So this summer I decided to try tea, and it's been going well. I had no idea what brand were good or anything, I've been drinking Twinings Earl Grey.

So, yeah, post your favorite teas or something.

Maybe this is what I need.
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

Yunnan, Russian Caravan and Irish Breakfast are some of my favourites. I think Oolong was pretty good but I haven't had that one in a while.

Although different brands vary in quality, they can also vary in taste. Spend a while trying different blends to find what you like best.

Personally I buy an Aussie brand called Abeya Gold for my ceylon, and Twinings for most of the others.

I've been getting into tea through www.adagio.com, great stuff. I prefer a lot of black teas (darjeeling in particular.)

Well like any true South Carolinian, for my regular sugery sugery sweet tea... I special order about 20 cases of tea from America's ONLY tea plantation in Charleston, SC. I drink that everyday.

But as far as the yumminess of flavored teas go... I'm a glutton for any with fruit flavors like blackberry and orange pekot. But I do enjoy a good cup of mint tea in the evenings. I've always been a big fan of green tea too. It's good for the body.

I've also had English Breakfast teas, and Earl greys and the like. But nothing comes close to SC tea. XD

Thanks, I'll give that a try. The earl grey is fine, I have to put sugar in though. I'm definitely open to trying something else.

Loose leaf Jade Oolong, loose leaf is great because you can use the same leaves 4 or 5 times.

I find generally that black tea with milk and sugar gives me wind, so I don't like having much of it.

being an tea purist im not a fan of fruit teas and mint teas and suff just like my regular cupp of morrisons red label at work and a random more fancy tea (usually twinings brand) at home.

just remeber: milk in first tea in second sugar in last anything else is blasphemy, also if its not masde in a pot and allowed to brew remeber to give the bag a squeeze on the sideof the cup, i'm sick of crap brews made by people who don't follow this process.:argh:

Some people like the taste. My mother buys double bergamot Earl Grey, which is twice as strong as regular Earl Grey.

I'm not much of a tea drinker, but if I do, I'll drink Twinings English or Irish breakfast tea, depending what I feel like drinking. I don't really like green or white tea. Sometimes I'll drink simple herbal teas: peppermint, liquorice, anise and hibiscus are my favorites. They're all pretty good at calming the stomach.

Heh, good to know, thanks. I've been trying to stay away from dairy, plus I don't feel the tea really needs milk, but I have been using sugar. Any thoughts as to how long the bag should stay in the cup?

Usual steeping time for a bag is 3 to 5 minutes.

Also the correct method is steep > sugar > milk. :colbert:

Orange pekoe does not actually have orange in it. See this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_pekoe

I, too, am a tea purist. I usually drink my tea without any sweetener or milk or cream, and I prefer loose leaves over teabags.

A good place to find loose-leaf tea is an Asian food store. This is actually how I became interested in tea.
Some recommendations:
Sencha - This is a common Japanese green tea. It has a very pleasant flavour. Good Japanese restaurants often order this stuff straight from Japan, because it's even better when it's fresh (produced no more than six months ago).
Genmaicha - This is sencha mixed with roasted rice. I think it's a good tea to try for someone who thinks they don't like green tea.
Matcha - This is green tea ground into a fine powder. Mixed only with water, some people may find its flavour unpleasant, but it actually goes quite well with sweetener and/or cream.
Pu erh - It is always described as having an "earthy" flavour. This is actually quite literal--it tastes like dirt. It's a worth a try just to experience it, even if it turns out you don't like it. Sometimes it tastes better on the second steeping. Also, unlike other teas, it gets better with age.
Gunpowder green tea - This tea is rolled into little balls, giving it the appearance of gunpowder. It has a stronger flavour than other green teas--one that I would describe as somewhat "smokey".
I'm just a little boy.

I like oolong and jasmine well enough, but I'm really not a habitual tea drinker.

I like iced tea a lot.

I also used to have the actual flowers you boil to make Jasmine ... damn those things packed a punch.

I have recently become a tea drinker myself. I steep my own, as tea bags are typically stale and gross. I like black teas. I buy mine loose from a local tea shop called TeaSource http://www.teasource.com

any teapot recommendations?
2008-05-17, 7:22 PM #34
I have yet to use one, but you might want to get a Yixing clay teapot. They absorb tea over time, which is said to enhance the flavour. Eventually they absorb enough that you can actually make tea by putting only water into the pot.

I drink a fair amount of tea. Most of it is plain English Breakfast, although I'm not opposed to a cup of Earl Gray, black, with some sugar. (I blame Picard for this :) )
Not such a fan of the other flavoured teas though.
