So I'm getting a new laptop because all 3 of my computers suck bad, and I want to know if this is a good deal. It's a custom built Dell Inspiron 9100

Windows XP(Which I like)
60GB Hard Drive
Intel Pentium 4 w/ HT Technology 3.2GHz, 15.4-in. WUXGA
512MB DDR 400MHz 2 DIMMs ram
128MB DDR ATI's 9700 AGP 8X Graphics Card
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+RW/+R)

Do you think $1870 is paying too much for a brand new laptop with those specs? Also, will this be able to run stuff like Half-Life 2 and Doom 3?

The price doesn't seem too bad, but I haven't shopped for laptops in years. It ought to run HL2 and D3, but not as well as a desktop of equal specs

Dell does make good standard laptops.

But Gateway sucks (which you are not getting).

sounds pretty solid.

I'm planning to e-bay for a laptop and then upgrade the hell out of it as much as i can afford. It would be far cheaper than a new one.

Actually I need help:

Intel® Pentium® 4 w/ HT Technology 3.2GHz, 15.4-in. WXGA
Intel® Pentium® 4 w/ HT Technology 3.2GHz, 15.4-in WSXGA+
Intel® Pentium® 4 w/ HT Technology 3.2GHz, 15.4-in. WUXGA

each one varies in about 30-40 in price with the WUXGA the most expensive. Does anyone know the difference?

Also, the difference between these:
Dual Drives: 48x CD-RW Drive + 8x DVD+RW Drive

Dual Drives: 48x CD-RW Drive + 16x DVD+RW/+R w/ double layer write capable

Also, I'm reconsidering the hard topic of laptop or desktop. I'm leaning towards a laptop because I constantly make 12+ hour plane trips to Sweden and other places and I get bored on planes. But desktops generally run faster and I play a lot of games...so:

Desktop:
3.4 GHZ Hyperthreading technology
1 gig of DDR ram
128 MB graphics card
160 Gig HD
CD/DVD burner at 48x and 16x

Price:$2,360

Laptop:
60GB Hard Drive
Intel Pentium 4 w/ HT Technology 3.2GHz, 15.4-in. WUXGA
1 Gig DDR ram
128MB DDR ATI's 9700 AGP 8X Graphics Card
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+RW/+R)

Price:$2,061

Help me [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

That desktop is a riiiiiiiiiip-offffffffffffffff. Get an AMD in that machine and it'll lower the price dramatically. Also, what gfx card?

I dunno, it's up to you. I think the laptop will serve as an adequate gaming machine, just not hardcore.

Those various names represent the native resolution of the screen.

WXGA is 1366x768
WSXGA+ is 1680x1050
WUXGA is 1920x1280

I'd recommend you pick whichever one you feel would look best to you since it's the resolution you'll be using most of the time.

Don't necessarily pick the largest one, as you may find it too high of a resolution for that size screen. Best way to see which one you like best is to go to somewhere like Best Buy and look at the various screens of that size with different native resolutions.

Oh, and that laptop's going to weigh a ton, get hot, and have low battery life, heh.

I'm getting two extra batterys with it so that wont be a big problem and if I'm around the house I'll just keep it plugged in. Anyone know the difference in the double write layer capable thing?

Also with the cheapest option of WXGA which is 1366x768 I will be able to go to higher resolutions correct?

No. Not only is native resolution the actual number of actual physical pixels in the screen, but it's also the maximum resolution of the screen. You also don't really want to use resolutions below it very much because they can look distorted and stretched.

Best advice I can give you is to figure out how many pixels per square inch the normal resolution you use on your desktop monitor is. Then get the screen with the closest number to that.

Oh, and those numbers I posted before are wrong. Didn't check then, but I just noticed they're not all 16:10 ratio like they should be. Site I got them from must have been wrong.

WXGA is 1280x800
WSXGA+ is 1280x1050
WUXGA is 1920x1200

A 15.4 in. widescreen monitor has about a 106.59 sq. in. area.

On that size screen:
WXGA is about 9606.90 pixels/sq. in.
WSXGA+ is about 12609.06 pixels/sq. in.
WUXGA is about 21615.54 pixels/sq. in.

For comparison's sake, on a 19" CRT(18" viewable), 1600x1200 is 12345.68 pixels/sq. in. So that's closest to WSXGA+. 1280x960 on 19" CRT is about 7901.23 pixels/sq. in., closer to WXGA. 2048x1536 on 19" CRT is 20227.16 pixels/sq. in., closer to WUXGA.

Oh, and the dual layer burner can burn dual layer DVD+R's. (Same size as the DVD's that most movies come on.) Unfortunately, the media for those isn't readily available yet. It will also burn normal DVD+R and DVD-R as well though.

Thanks everyone, it's settled and I am getting the laptop. The final specs (incase i changed them, too lazy to check) are as follows:

3.2 GHZ w/ hyperthreading and WSXGA+ 15.4 in. screen size

1 Gig DDR Ram

128MB DDR ATI's 9700 AGP 8X Graphics Card

8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+RW/+R with double write capable

and, 60 gigs of space.

Also, It comes with a free printer, free ink, and a free wireless mouse for $2050 USD
