Buying a digital camera, scammy seller?
2008-05-28, 11:50 AM #1
Hey, just looking up online sites to buy a Panasonic Lumix DMC FX500. Came across this site (link goes to the camera):

https://www.thelensfactory.co.uk/digital-cameras-1/panasonic-digital-cameras-23/panasonic-dmc-fx500-black-4481.htm?gclid=CNrvu-7syZMCFQ9pQgodfBn9hw

The price seems really good, considering I looked on the high street today and the only place that had in stock was selling it at £300.

I'm just concerned about the website because I've never heard about the company and can't find anything online about them. Advice? Is it a trap?

Thanks in advance, mass.

edit: Forgot to mention, did a whois on the site, it's only been registered since february 08, but perhaps it's just a new site?

edit2: The about page on this site is strikingly similar, http://www.sundigital.co.uk/pages/show/about-us
I really want that camera at that price, but it just looks so shifty.

I wouldn't go for it if I were you. I'd rather stick with a reputable retailer than take the risk.

I buy a lot of things online from reputable sources, I'm just reluctant to spend that much on an item from a source I've never heard of. And the price seems really nice.

Surely a scam artist wouldn't go all out and make a nice clean website like that?

edit: I'm paranoid about it because some places offer it at £266 like here http://www.ukdigitalcameras.co.uk/prod.asp?i=4605. Makes no sense!

I bought a lens at a shop in London and they didn't have fixed prices they just asked me to name a price and they agreed it was fair. You might be able to find a shop that will sell that camera at about £250 even if they'd normally sell it at £300

Did a look up on the post code, they are inside a business park, makes it seem much more legit.

I'm considering going into the shop tomorrow and asking if there's any chance they'll shift their price to 250. I'd be happy to pay that and receive it there and then. 250 is RRP, the shops are just being unrealistic.

edit: more digging, found the company that made their website. It seems they registered the address, as the post code is within walking distance, although different. The camera company has registered under a postcode that is in buckinghamshire, which is a good 250 miles away. Basically there is no person link to the company, apart from the website designers. Only got an address to play off.

The Terms and Conditions and stuff are identical, too (at the bottom). They have to be related or something.

What's wrong with City Link? Firebox use them and they delivered my last purchase the next day.

I agree with livid, they're quick in my experience and not too pricey.
nope.

they try and deliver stuff, when you tell them you won't be in, and don't even drop a card to say they've attempted delivery, then won't let you collect from the depot until they've attempted delivery for a second time (they don't tell you when this second attempt will be).

You usually told when a courier is going to deliver something so you should be in the first time.

:P
nope.
