Beta-testing "Story Arcade: Without Credit"
2008-05-28, 11:43 PM #1
After taking entirely way too many years to make, I finally have something to show! I'd like to request everybody's help in beta-testing my pencil-and-paper type game called "Story Arcade: Without Credit." As of right now, I only have the basic version finished, though I hope to have an advanced version completed relatively soon. You can check out how to play the game here:

http://storyarcade.nesnotes.net/

If anybody is interested in beta-testing, I'll be more than happy to help set up games either here on the forum or on the #massassi channel. I'll try and get some forums set up specifically for this game.

Any and all questions, comments, critiques, etc. would be most helpful! Ideally, I'd like to be able to use this as part of my portfolio, but we'll see how well the game works first.

Note: I need to fix a lot of the aesthetics of the site, I realize. Feedback is requested for that too, but my main concern is the game itself.

Wow when the basic instructions are 20 pages long it must mean something

Take a look at any game manual that you may own and you'll see that's not shabby -- it's downright minimal for what's technically a role-playing game. Those manuals also don't usually include example game-play (which takes up at least 1/5th of my manual). Still, if you have suggestions on what you feel could be cut down, I'm listening. :)

Am I to understand that you wrote a text adventure game in BASIC? Why would you do that to yourself? Use TADS.

Hehehehehee. Not that kind of Basic! I'm not even sure if it'd be possible to turn into even a text-based video game, but I'm going to see if I can't come closer in the advanced version. We'll see.

Oh, that sort of text game.

You should call it a 'table top game'. Text game implies, like. Inform. Also, use Inform. It's much better than TADS.

Tabletop to me has always implied miniatures like Warhammer or some such. Still, even the word "text" does seem to imply a genre of its own that this is not. Maybe I should just stick with calling it a game with no modifiers for now. *shrug*

Emon, TADS is probably more powerful, but writing Inform7 code is damn near writing natural english. 'The knife is an object that can be held. The knife is in the dresser'. Bam, there's a ****ing knife in the dresser!

By the way, if I didn't make it clear before, all people interested in testing should reply letting me know (either on this thread or by another means) and questions, comments, critiques and other feedback should be posted here as well. Thanks!

Also, should you try playing this game without me around, please reply with how that game went!

And Ford: maybe you'd have time to be an audience member for a game that was played on a forum? As an audience member, continued participation is not even required (though it is encouraged), so it should be pretty lax on time requirements.

Not that I expect this to really be of interest to anyone, but I just uploaded what was a ~9 page research paper I wrote on the game (you can find a link to it on the main page linked in the first post). I'm still looking for anyone who will be kind enough to help test my game.
