Browser extensions.
2008-06-03, 8:15 AM #1
The other thread got me curious. How many extensions do you have / use?

I've never had a problem upgrading firefox because "extensions don't work." I have 3 that I use on both of my computers.

Adblock
Noscript
WebDevToolbar

On my PC i have IE Tab as well.

I dont understand having a bazillion plugins. It seems like a lot of them are just so you can put some websites functionality into your browser. (ie facebook)

Adblock and Tabscope is pretty much it. Both of which I never see or use much.

adblock
that one that makes long tooltips not be cutoff.

I have the long tooltips thing and a thing that recognises web addresses and turns them into links, I was using it on my laptop at uni to nick songs off seeqpod. :P

I don''t use Adblock because the internet seems slightly soulless without them for some reason.
nope.
2008-06-03, 8:50 AM #5
Baconfish: Get FF3, it doesn't need an extension for long tooltips.

I have 10 addons right now, running on FF3:

Adblock Plus
Download Statusbar
FireFTP
FoxClocks
Greasemonkey (with the remember all passwords script)
IE Tab
SALR (Thinking of ditching this)
Tab Mix Plus (Oh god why aren't these in options by default)
User Agent Switcher
Web Developer Toolbar (Don't write HTML without it)
2008-06-03, 8:54 AM #6
I have firefox 3, I just happen to still have the extension on the computer.

:P
nope.
2008-06-03, 9:12 AM #7
adblock

but i also have added a couple extra search engines in the search engine list

Google Browser Sync, the long tooltip one, and a findbar that lets you search with regular expressions. Don't have all on all of my installations, though.
2008-06-03, 10:00 AM #9
I voted 6-10 because I have 9 on this (new) computer, but on my laptop I definitely have upwards of 11 (I think around 14)

On this computer I have

Adblock Plus
Adblock Filterset Updater
CS Lite
Download statusbar
Japanese-English dictionary for rikaichan
NoScript
RefControl
Rikaichan
Stylish

on my laptop I have all of the above plus

FoxyProxy
Web Developer toolbar (for work)
User Agent Switcher
Resurrect Pages

plus a couple that are disabled due to incompatibility with FF3

Firebug -- Likewise
4chan extension -- Really useful for browsing 4chan... yeah.
Mouse Gestures -- Fell in love with the feature using Opera, now I can't live without it.

I have developed for an intense dislike for this person.

It's good that he was banned, the swedish way :)

I have a bunch of extensions, some I keep disabled until I need them. I used to only use a handful but FF3 is fast enough I can use as many as I want now.

Some of my favorites:

Adblock Plus, All-in-One Sidebar, ArchView (preview ZIP and RARs before downloading, download specific files in online archives), Bookmarks UI Consolidator (moves bookmark menu to the bookmarks toolbar, works great with hiding the menubar), DOM Inspector, Firebug, FlashGot, Glasser (Aero Glass for Firefox), Greasemonkey, Hide Menubar, IE Tab, NoScript, Personas, ScribeFire, Stylish, Tab Mix Plus, Update Notifier, User Agent Switcher, Web Developer, フォクすけといっしょ (Together with Foxkeh).

*Nightly Tester Tools is for force-enabling extensions that work with FF3, but don't specify so in their manifest. That is, enables FF2 extensions for FF3. I think I'm only using it for OpenDownload now.

Also, the ABP element hiding helper is wonderful. It's great for removing the dead spaces leftover on sides after ABP has removed the ads.

*Nightly Tester Tools is overkill just to enable extensions.

You're not supposed to use both of those. The Filterset.G extension is intended for the original Adblock, which does not have it's own subscription system. You're effectively doubling the workload of Adblock Plus with it.

Shouldn't really run that either, Tab Mix Plus is much more stable and updated more often. :/

As far as I can tell, Filterset.G is more or less disabled right now anyway

It's a "set it and forget it" extension, it's not like I'm messing with it all the time.

Yeah, but it's a global change, I wanted to be able to toggle per-extension changes. I also wanted to be able to just remove the extension in the case of Firefox ****ing up (which happened multiple times when I did it by hand).

I don't use adblock because it's the equivalent of piracy and only hurts the sites you support.

The only extension I have is one to make the tab bar go on the bottom.
2008-06-04, 7:42 PM #36
I literally unblock ads for sites I support, and appreciate their ad placement.

I don't see how removing something you would otherwise completely ignore is piracy.

Incorrect. If anything, loading the ads and not clicking them hurts more than not loading the ads at all.

The higher your views per click ratio is, the better you get paid for most services. If you have no intention on ever clicking any of the ads on a site there is absolutely no reason not to block them.

I'm surprised that glasser isnt more widely used. I was so pissed when they didnt throw aero glass support into FF3. They let that bug sit for months and months and months always claiming it was "too hard", someone finally does a proof of concept and the story changes to "ITS TOO LATE IN THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS to add it. utterly ridiculous. I guess glasser does the job but it should really really be a part of firefox core.

They didn't put glass in it because it looks like absolute ***. Especially when:

A. It's maximized.
B. You have extra toolbars (like Web Developer)
C. The navigation on it is all screwed up
D. It looks ugly anyway :p
