I recently did some work for my mum on a program called Endnote, which explained that you move from field to field by pressing tab (I knew this, it works for everything I've used) but in order to go back you press shift+tab. Now, I thought this was just for this program, but a minute ago I was just entering my username at photobucket; I put in 'maevie', hit tab to go to the password field, then remembered I'm registered there as 'mavispoo', so I automatically hit shift+tab, and it worked! no having to move my hand that whole 40cm to reach my mouse!

So, if it wasn't for this program, I'd never have known that shortcut, although I'm sure many of you already did. Therefore I'd like people to share handy shortcuts of the slightly less usual variety than ctrl-z and alt-f4. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

tab - move between fields
shift+tab - move backwards between fields
ctrl+z - undo
ctrl+y (or sometimes r) - redo
ctrl+x - cut
ctrl+c - copy
ctrl+v - paste
ctrl+f - find
ctrl+a - select all
alt+f4 - close

That's about all the ones I can think of right now... I use them daily. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

This is one for the Opera users, dunno if it works in anything else:

Ctrl + N = open new window
Ctrl + Space bar = go to homepage

N and Space are close to each other and both combos can be pushed with just your left hand on the keyboard. Very handy for quick access to your homepage (mine is Google which I use all the time).

Somebody posted very resently here that
ctrl + shift + Esc Opens the Taskmanager.

Why would you use new window's when you have tabs? I usually have atleast 10 tabs open in Opera, but I've never had to open a new window. (aha, just tried it, ctrl+n is new tab! it's ctrl+t in firefox, which we have at uni, so I always get all confused with those)

One of the things I truly adore about Opera - I have amazon.com (.co.uk would be better, but no option for that) and google search fields just under my address bar.

Firstly, me huggles Opera for all the above reasons and more, secondly I set up my start menu (xp stylee) so I've got shortcuts to all my most used apps - ie,

win then o = opera
win then f, then enter = firefox
win then f, then f, then enter = foobar

and I always have a sneaky shortcut to my floppy drive with Ctrl-Alt-A - but since my desktop cleanout, and the fact my floppy is now on my objectdock, I got shut of that...

also, win+m = minimise all windows,
shift+win+m = restore all windows.

That one's awesome. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Wheeee

Also, if you're in windows explorer, and you want to massrename a group of files, you can highlight them all, press F2, and then type in "Jimbo" and then all the files will be named "Jimbo" "Jimbo0" "Jimbo1" "Jimbo2" etc.

/ then typing finds text from bottom up
. then typing finds text from top down

f3 is find next

ctrl-t is bookmark

alt-f3 is view source

ctrl-alt-v is validate page [i use this one a lot]

ctrl-up/down navigates links in a page

space is page-down and next when at the bottom of a page

num+/- zoom in and out, 6 resets to 100%

ctrl-space is go to home page

ctrl-alt-shift-n is duplicate page

ctrl-d [very used as well] is paste-and-go, ie with an address in clip open a new tab and hit ctrl-d [address bar need not be selected] to go to that address.

f4 opens/closes the sidebar which i mostly use for searching bookmarks and such.

i could come up with more perhaps but those are the ones i use most, along with lots of mouse gesturing.

Try doing it with no mouse. Back when I had Windows ME it would do a half-arsed crash (yeah it couldn't even die right) and I'd have no mouse control. So I surfed around (until it was time to reinstall) using just keys. It was rather interesting and took me awhile to realize the shift+tab thing.

Maeve, all you need do is have your start menu (you don't actually need xp) set so that all your favourite apps are at the FIRST menu popup, ie, when you press the windows key, you can see your shortcuts. So if you don't run xp, they have to be at the top of the start menu, where word tries to put all those crappy shortcuts. Then, just make sure that all your faves have an original first letter, so they can't start with p (programs), s (settings) for example.

So you just press win, your start menu pops, then you (eg) press O for opera - and because nothing else starts with O, it just runs opera! easy as the proverbial pie!

(apologies for SPAG, a touch drunkenated)

Win + D shows desktop, as said before. But few people realize you can hit this again to restore the windows to their original places, but will not touch minimized windows. It even memorizes what window was last used, and the layering.

Alt+D goes to address bar, and highlights everything.

Ctrl+C in dos stops a running program.

Win + R brings up the Run Dialog.

Useful one for those who do it accidentally and want to know wtf happened:

ctrl+scrollwheel changes font size.

ctrl+esc opens start menu.

F4 in IE goes to address bar, F5 refreshes, F1 makes annoying help window. Those are the obvious, everybody-already-knows-that shortcuts, but hey, if you put the alt-tab shifts through apps, and win+e goes to explorer, then it's a semi-decent post [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I always check out some of the keyboard shortcuts in the new programs, Help normally has a list of them if your search for keyboard shortcuts....

never been a big fan of tabs in firefox until just now when i realised I hadn't looked for a keyboard shortcut for it.....crtl-tab....handy that.

still like new windows because I have two buttons on the side of my mouse and have one locked to "alt-tab ing" between programs....and the other to closing, makes things so much easier not have to go for the "x", the buttons in the top right of all programs hardly ever get used now.

i'll try tabs in firefox for a while and see how it goes....uumm shortcuts

That reminds me.

Ctrl-r reloads all open tabs.

1/2 will switch back and forth between them.
Alternately, you can hold down the off mouse [for me it's the left button as my mouse is on that side of the keyboard] button and use the scroll wheel.
