If you know how to build or obtain high explosives, and you are willing to break the law, you can earn much easier money elsewhere.

I've often wondered about how you get into that sort of stuff.

Say I had knowledge of explosives and wanted to get involved with criminal elements that could use those skills. I wouldn't even know where to look.

Well if he HAD actually had a bomb, and he knew he was caught, he probably WOULD have blown himself up, probably killing most of the people in the bank, depending on his explosive. The guy should have just popped him in the head and ended it. Wiser choice? Probably not, but definately a lower risk of being exploded.

Yeah, depending on the distance, a bullet to the head would've been preferred to gunpoint. If the guy feels he's at the end of his rope, and the tides change against him, he might take the building down. I like this CC story.

It does make me wonder though. You always hear about people robbing banks claiming they have a bomb, but how many times do they actually have one. I don't think I've ever heard of a story where the person actually had one and wasn't just lying to get the teller to do what they want.

The best bomb robbery had to be the one John Travolta pulled off in Swordfish. He's holding the bomb with the trigger that if he lets go it explodes, so basically they cant shoot him (they wanted to snipe him) so he more or less walks out of there. Granted, if it had been real life they would have quickly figured something out, or at least followed him to no end. Still a neat concept though.

Well, a dead man switch is a fairly standard component, used in all suicide bomb explosive vests but also for bomb threats like this. I mean, if you're going to get killed, you might as well take as many others with you on the way.

You have to be monumentally stupid to rob a bank. I wonder what the success rate is there.

If by 'success' you mean actually robbing the bank, pretty high. If 'success' means 'getting away without getting caught', well..not as high as the former.

The area I live in is infamous for successful bank robberies (as in not getting caught). And the sad thing is, several of the robbers got away on foot.
