Another PS3 thread....

All right, so I finally got the X360 Elite (a while back) and my humongargantunormous (to me) TV, now all thats left is a PS3/BD player. Which BD is the primary reason im even considering the PS3 for the time being. However, I have noticed that aside from Backward Compat, theres no real reason to pay for anything better than the 40gb. The HDD is a simple SATA swap, so if I ever need more space I can just dump a 500gigger in there right?

Is there any REAL reason I shouldn't get a 40gb model if I don't care for backwards compat? Input from owners would be nice. All my friends have the 60gb model, but I don't think ANY of them have actually used the backwards compatability since they got it.

Nope, no real reason. FYI, the HD is a 2.5" SATA drive, so it's gonna cost a little more, but you can still get like 300 gigs for not much more than $100 I think.

Also, if you're getting it for the blu-ray, I'd recommend getting Netflix (if you don't already have it), simply because blu-ray movies are expensive, but it costs no more to get blu-ray movies from Netflix than it does to get DVDs.

300gb is still a good amount of space for a hundred bucks IMO. I don't rent movies anymore. I used to for purposes that are not to be mentioned *RIPPING* but have since passed that up. Now I buy movies!!

Mainly because now I can afford them haha.

If you want to have memory stick reader slots, you won't have those on the 40 GB. The 40 GB also doesn't play SACDs. Probably doesn't matter, but the 40 GB lacks the glossy finishing too.

I didn't know that. That would actually be a selling point for me.

I don't even know what SACDs are, the glossy finish... that kinda sucks, I was considering getting the gunmetal MGS4 console but its just not worth $600. No use for card readers on a console either.

what do you mean by no glossy finish... my 40gig is plenty shiny are you seriously suggesting the others are shinier?

but here's the differences between the 40gig and the others

20,60,80gig multi-card reader, 4 usb ports, backwards compatibility, sacd (deader format than hd dvd) support

40gig no card reader, 2 usb ports, no PS2 compatibility, no sacd

if you don't care about the card reader (a usb reader might work anyway), don't need PS2 compatibility, don't care about having only 2 usb ports (that's why qod invented hubs), and don't need sacd playback there's no real reason not to get the 40gig

*shrug* If you wanna drop $25-$30 on movies (cause that's what any decent blu-ray movie is gonna cost you right now) that with most you'll watch once or twice. I prefer the pay $15/month route that gets me probably around 10 movies a month or more for half the price of your average blu-ray movie, then only buying stuff that I really, really want to have a permenant copy of.

don't buy your blurays in the stores unless there is a sale... almost always cheaper online plus online sales happen often...

Yeah online sales are much better for Blu-Ray. Oh I forgot to mention only 2 USB slots for the 40 GB. As for the glossy finish, I never seen a 40 GB up close to compare to my 60 GB. I'm only spouting out what others have said in comparing the models. How shiny is the 40 GB? I can somewhat make our my reflection with the 60 GB model.

What does the PS3 use its USB ports for anyways?

I really don't get to watch movies as much as I like, which is why I cant justify renting. I still havent seen IRONMAN or HULK... but I WILL go see WALL-E.

USB devices.

Memory card readers, hard drives, the PSX->PS3 memory card importer, music players, cameras, keyboards, mice, PSP, and it's typically used to charge the controller.

The launch 60 GB had a chrome steel faceplate around the SD card reader and the optical drive. The launch 20 GB had a matte black faceplate. The new 40 GB model has the silver faceplate as well.

Wow so its actually a USB port thats useful instead of the 'almost useful' ports on the PS2. Which by the way I managed to get a keyboard and mouse to work with Dirge of Cerberus (which was an okay shooter IMO)

Personally, I'm probably going to go with the 40 gig myself. I got a working PS2 (One of the new ones) Mostly for Blu-ray and new games. I'm keeping the PS2 for the games and such, (So, no need for backwards compatibility)
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

I like how MGS4 only increased PS3 sales "slightly"
2008-06-20, 2:56 PM #17
There's also GT5

Failstation three is going to need like 12 more "slightlies" if it wants to stop being a gigantic money pit
2008-06-20, 3:04 PM #19
I agree.
2008-06-20, 5:05 PM #20
Failstation? I sense fanboyism and trolling...
2008-06-20, 5:11 PM #21
To be fair, the only thing it has going for it is bluray. Other than that it sucks...There are no games on it that are any good that aren't also on the 360. No games I like anyway...

sonic 2006 is pretty fun in an ironic way.

Really?

Because I sense a realistic representation of mediocre sales.
2008-06-20, 8:31 PM #24
because the PS3 version has worse graphics, more random slowdown and even longer load times. and it was released 6 months after the 360 version.

still the same furry fantasy author x sonic slash fan fiction plotline though!

Waiting for a port of MGS4 to the Gaijin console.
