I had/have this urge to buy an extremely cheap, obsolete computer

...like something circa 2001-2003, with less than or equal to 1Ghz processor clock speed, maybe 128 MB ram, <= 40 gig HD (these are pretty much the specs of my 2001-circa HP Pavilion on which I developed things like the Imagecorner for Massassi but is now dead :( :(). Preferably a laptop. I basically want this thing to function as a typewriter that I can lug around and occasionally browse the internet with (although FF would probably kill it with so little ram).

So, the purpose of this thread is twofold:

1) Where might I find such a thing?

2) In the process of searching for such a thing, I cam across this on Froogle and was mildly appalled. How the **** can a 450Mhz Fruit iMac with a 20GB HD and 128 MB of ram go for almost SIX HUNDRED ****ING DOLLARS today? [And it's refurbished.]

If you don't have an answer to 1), post other stories of absurd prices for things (links if possible).

[Edit: Title should be "urge" and not "hurge," although that is a cool-sounding word and it should be used for something]

I'm using one right now if you want it.

Better yet, steal it and I can claim it on my renters insurance so I can afford to build something at least somewhat up to date. :awesome:

Just get an EEE PC. Plus, laptops that old will have very, very dead batteries.

But Eees don't come with the nostalgia of my childhood :(

Pommy, get yourself a Toughbook CF-27. I've bought 3 for exactly that sort of purpose and they melt face.

Usually 4-6GB HDD, 128MB RAM p2 300 processor, 1x USB1.1, 2xPCMCIA.

Keep checking on Ebay 'til you find a complete one at a reasonable price. [mine were all 125$ or less]

Ok, now you really aren't making any sense.
The very next post being, the post after mine...
Where Pommy said what you said, and then I acknowledged that, and THEN you said the same thing....
So yeah, you're as bad, if not worse, then I was =p

Ok anyways

I am slowly being seduced by Eee mainly because of Matty's point about the battery, despite my desire to have a nostalgic old computer running Win2K or something

The Eee 901 isn't out yet in the us but is reported to have much lower power consumption = longer battery life due to the Atom processor. The most complaints I've seen about the current Eees is the somewhat short battery life. Should I wait for the 901? (It's more expensive too)

I remember someone on here had an Eee... JLee maybe? Can anyone with experience regarding it offer some more insight?

The MSI Wind is a lot more attractive than the Eee from a price/features standpoint. Dell is also coming out with a similar notebook that looks quite good.

Z@N said it, but craigslist will be where you'll find exactly what you're looking for.
