blue LEDS
2008-06-22, 9:00 PM #1
Dear manufacturers:
I understand you are very proud that your product is ON, or that blinking means it is working. However, your ridiculously bright blue LEDs are NOT helpful. I really don't care, and can generally tell if the device is working. When did green LEDs go out of style?

In conclusion, end the madness you ****s. I'm tired of being blinded by LEDs that can light up a whole room at night.

--
I was hoping they were a trend that would go away, but instead, more and more manufacturers keep using blue LEDs :( Almost all of the devices I have have duct tape over their status lights.

Turn you stuff off when you're not using it. It'll make your room dark and it will save you money on your power bill.

I unplug things.

Because most of the stuff I have lights up even if it's only plugged in!

My DVD player has an LED indicator for when the device is off. It turns off when the device is turned on, and turns on when the device is turned off.

My external HD has a long blue LED indicator that is annoying when trying to go to sleep, so I just turn it off. My MBP's sleep light is actually kind of soothing.

I unplug my TV whenever I'm not using it, because just having a CRT plugged in uses electricity.

I never really thought about it, but it indeed seems new devices tend to have blue leds, and they do light the room quite forcefully. I very rarely keep my computer on during nights so it doesn't really matter to me. I'm happy my VDSL modem has green leds, though, because it would be a bother to unplug it every night. I wonder how much power it eats...

Then cover the lights with a towel or something. Point is there are ways to mitigate the problem as opposed to *****ing about it.

Point is all these extra lights are useless and annoying.
And what are forums for if you can't have a ***** now and then?

I think a while back I was told something like the power Britland uses in standby LEDs etc each year is enough to juice up a village for said time period.

Also why don't you just disconnect the LEDs? :P
nope.
2008-06-23, 6:26 AM #23
because the LEDs could be a part of the circuit, especialy if the device is cheaply made.

or it was stupidly made and the extra current that would go through the circuit without the LED there would disrupt the operation of the device.

I agree, they're excessive. They couldn't even be so bad if they just toned down the brightness.

Har har. Yeah, disabling the leds of a DSL modem sounds like such a splendid idea...

I actually went and borrowed an electricity consumption meter (or whatever it's called) from my power company, and I'm going to check how much the thing eats electricity.

I have an external drive that has an xbox 360-like ring of lights on the top (except they are blue LEDs, naturally), which lights up in various sequences whenever the drive is in use. I'll admit it looked pretty cool for about the first 2 minutes.

I've got a strip of blue LEDs along the front of my case, I haven't had those plugged in for quite a while now. My speaker's power light is blue, as are the LEDs on the x52 (although the power indicators are green). The x52 I've got on the lowest brightness setting so it's not so bad anymore. My Eclipse is also blue back-lit. External drive has an orange light strip, but that lives behind my monitor, and it's not too bright.

The problem is they are annoying when I *AM* using them. My monitor has a giant blue led on the front which is extremely distracting.

This opinion is ridiculous. Did you even read the original post? I have them all covered in tape. Get out of my thread if you're not even going to pay the slightest bit of attention.

if something is prevalent, annoying, and unnecessary, then there is grounds for complaint in my book. green LEDs and red LEDs work fine and arent ridiculously annoying. it seems to me that ever since blue came out they have been slowly growing in popularity and now they are on EVERYTHING.

thank god microsoft had some sense and put green led's on the xbox, even if it was probably just because xbox is synonymous with green.

i'm hardly prevalent. i barely post.
article about blue leds and how they suck: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000337.html

i'm actually considering modding some of my blue leds to green. like the one in my monitor.
