In the 19th century, mercury was used to cure constipation. I don't know if it works, but it's a fairly brute-force way to attack the problem; drink something really heavy to force the **** down. Somewhat messier alternatives include standing on your hands and inhaling helium, I guess.

They weren't opposed to putting leeches on their skin to suck out the 'bad blood'.... so why wouldn't drinking metal make them poo?
