How awesome is Robert Jordon?

11 more books to go for me.

I don't know; I'm a bigger fan of Robert Jordan.

You are aware he's dead, right?

Why yes, sorry, the title is misleading. "Was" is better, yes? Or "was" was better, no?

I started reading the Wheel of Time books when his death was announced. I was given the first book by the hand of my first and former girlfriend, but never read it. Then I read the first few chapters back last year when he died, then finally this weekend read through the rest.

I don't think one should be able to vote in this poll unless one has gotten past the first say 4 books. I thought the books were awesome, too, when I had only read the first 3.

However, the guy who is writing the last one, Brandon Sanderson, has 3 totally awesome books of his own that you should take a look at.

Elantris
Mistborn 1 & 2

Good luck getting past book 7, which I've entitled "The Useless 1000".

1000 ****ing pages of nothing.

Must be a fast read.

You don't like the rest past book 3?

If only. You still have stuff to read about, but it amounts to just about as much as reading a SAJN movie review.

The rest was great :P

The others after seven?
2008-07-07, 11:14 AM #9
8 seemed to get better. 9 I got bored of reading. I would imagine that 10-Finale are much more climactic and interesting as we reach the last stretch. I need to find the courage to read them someday. However, whether I enjoyed his actual writing or not, as an aspiring author I have GREAT respect for him.

I read through Book 7, A Crown of Swords. I felt like nothing was ever happening. I enjoyed Perrin's outings but the "Mat" sections were awful and the Rand ones were painful because... well I won't spoil anything. I think the main problem is that I always felt they would take one step forward and two steps back. Every bad guy that died was either resurrected by the Dark One or replaced by someone else. He made these huge battles out to be really important, but they don't end up being important. The story lines stagnated and I got bored.

I hear they started getting better. I doubt I'll ever be able to personally verify that assertion.

Ack, I just looked up WoT on wikipedia and it says that the Wheel of Time series has sold 30 million copies, and all books starting at 8 have hit the NYT bestseller list.

And, depressingly, the Harry Potter series has sold... 400 million copies. Holy cow.
2008-07-07, 2:02 PM #12
Woah.

Well, I'll dread the day I'll come to seven then. My ex got to six before she stopped and gave me the first book. And now you all hate it :P

I start the second tonight.

I enjoyed it all the way through. But maybe that's because I quite enjoyed watching all the relationships develop, and it's not all about the 'OMG HUGE BATTLES' for me. (You're all shallow.)

Though I'll admit that something surprising did happen in book 11. Some of the side plots actually ENDED! D:

When reading them, you have to understand how the story line is laid out. The first book stands on it's own. The series could end there, and almost did; Jordan planned it so it could, if he didn't sell anymore. But he got signed for two more. He did the same thing again; the story could end with book 3. But he got signed for the whole series. Each time, he left himself an 'out' - a way the previous events could be interpreted differently so that the series kept going. (It should be noted that at the end of 1 and 3, eh, spoiler - Rand defeats 'the dark one', though both times it's just Ishmeal who THINKS he's the dark one because he's gone insane. Supposably he will defeat the real dark one at the end of book 12. )

I've read all of the books up until now, including the prequel "New Spring". I've enjoyed each & every one. I'd have to put the "Wheel of Time" up there with "Sword of Truth" & "A Song of Ice and Fire".
? :)

He's a really really fluffy writer. I've restarted it 3 or 4 times. I can't seem to get past Crown of Swords. The politics are mind numbingly boring.

Classic, I say. That's how the old bards did it.
2008-07-07, 3:18 PM #17
I like the politics. People have complained about the characters being two-dimensional, but...maybe I'm just not aware of what a "deep" character is. The only thing I have a problem with is the fact that every single woman in the series, past age 13, has a nice rack, and the whole three-women-married-to-Rand bit .

Otherwise, I look forward to the 1500 pages that will be the final book. Oh, and booyah, you ain't got nothin' on me:

Wolfy, why do you have pictures of my bookshelf?

No, I kid, mine has The Song of Ice and Fire and The Kingdom of Thorn and Bone right below The Wheel of Time.

I'd like to point out my copy of "The World of Wheel of Time", which you lack, sir!

I do have the PC game stashed away somewhere. Great music, terrible game. I could write a list of all the things wrong about it, but I'll hold back and do you one better:

On the contrary sir; I do indeed have it - but it does not fit on that shelf. Give me a page number, and I shall quote the text for you.

Though I would like to know why my webserver takes forever to serve that specific image.

My collection has been proved inadequate, as not all of mine are hardcover w/dust jackets. .(

I didn't think the PC game was that bad. I had a hard time with it, and it was... uninspired. But some of the levels were really cool looking. And the one with that black mist thing rocked.
2008-07-07, 8:40 PM #29
Shayol Ghul didn't have the beasties in the books - the only thing that was in the books was the mist and the general evil of the city. The books went into a lot more depth on its history, but the game threw that away.

Also, ter'angreal are not discard after one use.

Everything else about that game also sucked.

No one who couldn't weave would ever become keeper, and the Amyrlin wouldn't send her keeper - who the things were stolen FROM - to go get them anyway. I never played past the first level or so, though. The mist was kept killing me. The collision mechanics were wacked too. I could stand in perfectly clear air and die, and walk through mist and live.

How far back was this game? When was it released?

1999-ish

I should probably buy it...maybe I'll check eBay.

Doesn't look bad for a 1999ish game.

I bought the second book. I'll see about this game, and it's soundtrack, soon >.>
2008-07-08, 2:10 PM #34
It was on unreal engine, if I recall correctly.
2008-07-08, 2:47 PM #35
I'm sure this has been pointed out but your title should read "How awesome was Robert Jordan".
nope.
2008-07-08, 3:10 PM #36
I enjoyed the game. The level where you travel The Ways scared the hell out of me. The game could have been much better, especially multiplayer, but I enjoyed it overall. The soundtrack was indeed good.

I've sold most of my books so I don't have much to take photos of. I'm going to get an eReader soon & do things that way to save money.
? :)
2008-07-11, 1:28 PM #37
Who made the soundtrack? I'm having a hell of a time finding it. I found one by someone named Robert also, but it was a progressive rock sounding one.
