DS- I feel like RIT would be more awesome if you were still there. I hope you're having a great time in the woods being a mountain man, it's kind of what I want to do someday. Good luck, don't get eaten by a bear!

I was going through some old papers and found a club newsletter where the Outing Club was featured, and Detty was right there up front. I found it pretty serendipitous.

So you say you ount!

So I'm out of the woods for a short while while I teach a caving class for a few days. The text that got covered up was "Adirondack Museum."

Basically, I got a job as an Assistant Forest Ranger for the summer. Because the full time rangers have too much crap to deal with to spend very much time actually being in the woods (ironic, I know), they've hired me to hike around the West Canada Lakes Wilderness Area in upstate New York, interacting with and educating hikers, yelling at people for camping in the wrong spots (New York is actually pretty lenient, you can camp wherever the hell you want as long as you are at least 150 feet off the trail and 150 feet away from any water, yet people still insist on camping within these areas because they are lazy), and taking care of search and rescue/first aid stuff as necessary. I hike around for 5 days at a time, and usually I am in the woods for those 5 days straight.

The coolest part of the job so far: As part of training, I got to jump out of a helicopter and get lowered to the ground on a cable. I don't have any pictures of me coming down on the cable, but I do have some pictures of that day:
