KoToR Problem
2003-12-27, 5:14 AM #1
I just bought KoToR today, went through the installation, etc. etc., ran the game, and it's extremely choppy. The thing is, I can't see why. I've tried restarting, disabling my virus scanner, scaling options, and nothing seems to help. Sound runs fine, but everything else is slow and jerky. The system scan on the configuration menu tells me that my system exceeds the recommended requirements as well. Anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it?

My specs:

Windows XP
Intel Pentium 4 2.6 GHz
512 MB RAM
77 GB free (111 GB total)
Radeon 9200 128MB
DirectX 9.0b

The word around town is that KotoR crashes after doing about anything.

It's not crashing, it's just jerking [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

It's the latest version by the way.

I had to turn the graphic settings way down. I had 2x AA and no AF. I ran at 800x600 @ 72 and even then I was still choppy. And there was a GeForceFX 5400 I believe in that machine.

My crashing dilemma is when the Yoda-looking guy is introduced, the screen is filled with HOM, two characters clip each other, and then I get a runtime error. No joke.

I must be the only person who has no problems with KotOR. Go figure.

You aren't the only one. Runs great on mine.

However, you have a 9200 in that machine... it is a budget card. You can't expect much out of it.

Well, I went over to GameFAQs to see if anyone there had any problems, and one guy mentioned something called a Catalyst XP Driver, so I downloaded that from ATI's website. 22 MB later, KoToR's running great. Budget cards so rock [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Try turning off shadows. That helped a lot for me.

No problems here - I've started it again as a female soldier, since I did male scout last time. I figured, two genders, three classes and two paths, makes twelve different games! Nice!

My friend has it, and it requires 2 things--Processor and Video Card. His system

Athlon XP 1800, 1.5 GHz
ATi Radeon 9700 pro
512 MB PC2700 DDRAM

the important specs are there, and it runs kinda crappy on his system (20fps). However it IS frellin beautiful, I've seen it. I don't see why it should run so badly on Livid's comp, and if you have a decent comp it runs well.

Tell him to get a new CPU such as Athlon XP 2600. No wonder it runs badly! He has an 1800.

Runs like a dream for me, but then again there's no reason why it shouldn't, heh.

I did have one issue with it crashing when using the elevator on the Leviathan though. Took like 4 tries for it to get through there without crashing.

Odd... your specs are far superior to those of the x-box, yet the x-box version of the game ran flawlessly with a decent framerate.

Turn off shadows and the grass in the graphics options. I have a 1GHZ machine, 512 MB RAM, and a 64 MB DDR RAM video. Runs fine after that.

Ususaly games run worse on *suposivly* better system because the person doesnt know how to up keep there system and let a ton of junk use up all its resoures and use the worse drivers even tho there the newest one. I use the 4.4.0.3 drivers and there like 1000 points better on 3dMark2001 than the newer ones.

Mine ran flawlessly.. With a higher resolution than the X-box AND I could still run opera and trillian in the background.. Take that GOY

Well; I ran KoToR on the X-box, and still had my PC free for doing other things =p.

I just started playing KotOR again, and now I am having signature safedisc problems. Is there a patch to remove the safedisc protection system? I remember having this problem with Morrowind on an old machine ( that was still able to murder Morrwind), and when they released a patch taking away safedisc it was fine.

BTW, from your description, you are having safedisc problems too.

I don't really have any problems on mine. The only thing that happens is after every time I have a vision, it scrolls through the conversation with Bastilla, so I can't read any of it. . .

Here, perfectly legal if you own the game.

I found the game's performance to be much improved with the 1.1 Patch and the (older) 3.8 Catalyst drivers. I'm sure 3.9 had some Open GL issues, which may or may not have been fixed in 3.10.
