In your guys' opinions, what are the best 2d rpgs, particularly from a storytelling point of view? I'm looking for uh, inspiration. If you could just post the title, the system, and say why it's great I would greatly appreciate it.

Do Fallout 1/2 count? They're genius.

Also Final Fantasy 4 and 6, they're the best Final Fantasies by far.

I think Chrono Trigger is one of the best 2D RPG games for a lot of reasons, but storytelling wise, it's actually not terribly crazy. Same goes for Zelda (if we were counting that as an RPG). I haven't actually played too many 2D video game RPGs... I find most of them to look generically fantasy-ish (or sci-fi-ish or what-have-you) story-wise. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door might be an exception, if you're willing to count a simplistic, slightly younger-aged audience based on a franchise.

RPGs actually hit home a major issue of storytelling versus gameplay. If you want, I can ramble on about it, which could prove helpful.

Chrono Trigger, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 2/4 and Final Fantasy 3/6 are the best ones I've ever played, all for the SNES.

Final Fantasy 4 and 6 have the best storylines, Zelda is more gameplay oriented and Chrono Trigger is just a fun game (the story for it reminds me of a 3rd grader writing a story for school, but it's still fun).

All of these are great games (theres a reason CT has made it from SNES, to PSX, and now DS)

Also Final Fantasy V was a good one.

FF4 was painfully long. CT was the ****.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Final Fantasy 6. I'd say Chrono Trigger but I never recovered from losing my quite advanced savegame in early 2003 even though by now I'd probably have finished the game like 7 times. Oh well.

Earthbound also seemed somewhat neat.

Fallout 1 had better storytelling, but otherwise I agree. Square's RPGs tend to have inane plots with nonsensical characters, I generally just play them for the character building part.

I never really understood why Legend of Zelda 2d games go under RPG. Because of the inventory screen and medieval-ish settings? Wouldn't it be best as something like "Action Adventure"?

Secret of Evermore was also very good. Challenging as well. I can't say most Squaresoft games were from that day, but the real time fighting made Evermore better IMO.

The initial time limit thing always put me off Fallout 1, which is a shame because I really wanted to enjoy it.

Earthbound's gameplay is simplistic even for its time, but it's a great choice if you're looking for story. It really makes you feel connected to its world and characters. That's why It's my favorite RPG.

Warcraft 3 had a really good storyline.
Lemme put it this way:
I hate warcraft type games (yes people, that includes starcraft, fire at will)
I LOVED single player Warcraft 3.
