Soy vey! Does eating tofu lower sperm count?
Do real men eat soy? Perhaps. But if they want to become fathers, they may want to limit their tofu intake. A new study shows that downing soy products may lower sperm count. The reason, according to the research published in the journal Human Reproduction (pdf): soy beans contain high amounts of phytoestrogens, organic compounds that mimic the female hormone estrogen in the human body and, in animal studies, have been shown to reduce testosterone levels. Lead study author Jorge Chavarro, a research fellow in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, and his colleagues found that men who ate at least half a serving a day of soy had, on average, 34 million fewer sperm per milliliter than those who skipped it. But Chavarro doesn't recommend you give up the soy burgers—at least not yet. He notes that the study was limited (99 men) and that more research is needed to prove that tofu actually reduces male fertility.

I eat tofu about once a week so I guess my swimmers are fine.

I eat soy all the time for this very reason.

Really not a fan of tofu anyway. Tasteless bean jello.

Tofu?

Have you looked at my name?
nope.

I've only ever had tofu once. It was cut up into little cubes at a salad bar, so I put some on my salad thinking it was feta cheese. Imagine my surprise...

Probably ruined it for me forever; I'm sure it's not that bad but biting into some weird tasteless rubbery stuff when you're expecting nice strong cheese was rather unpleasant.

I like tofu but I only ever seem to eat it at this chinese buffet I go to occasionally.

Tofu is great as long as it isn't plain or in chunks that are too large.

Who needs so much testosterone anyway?

Article was written poorly. It does lower sperm count, but it does not limit a chance of fertility.

The research into soy isoflavones has a lot more to do with our use of soy in baby formulas.

No seriously. I imagine everything the media takes these days are reporting "a possibility" or "it may" as "it will". Not for the current topic, however, as there are conclusive evidence for that. The BBC has been picking fights with tofu recently. The first article is a response to the OP's....thing, and the second is just another report of how bad tofu is lolol

The soy baby formulas Nestle markets in the third world contain as much as 3-5x the effective estrogen concentration of a birth control pill per serving. In North America it's between 1% and 100%. Long-term health and development research hasn't been done on these formulas. They contain many times the amount found in simple tofu.

You could apply that same recipe to real food and get better results

For example, substitute the tofu with beef. Beef in soysauce, ginger, and garlic, then stirfried with noodle, carrots (I'd substitude with mushrooms since i hate carrots) and peppers. Now that is a wholesome win.

Plus I was referring to the actual tofu itself being tasteless. It pretty much adapts whatever taste you pair it with.

I guess it comes down to, beef eaters have fun with your increased risk of heart attacks, and tofu eaters have fun with estrogen and decreased amounts of sperm.

except for, you know, the fact that the link between heart disease and red meat dates back to 1950s-era superstitions about lipids and actual research indicates that people who eat lean red meat are at no more risk of heart disease than people who eat lean white meat

And what if compared to those who eat no meat?

Unless you drink red wine to counter the heart problems!

Except beef and chicken get boring sometimes and tofu is a good alternative. Fish too but it's harder to cook

Depends on whether or not those people who eat no meat get saturated fats in their diet from sources that aren't contaminated with trans fats.

That's the French Myth. People realized that the French eat a lot of saturated fat (fois gras, red meats, dairy) but don't have nearly as much heart disease as North Americans. The truth is that, while they eat fois gras, they don't eat margarine and Doritos.

Iron and amino acids and other such nutrients are important as well I believe, you can't be healthy if you're not getting those.

No.

To beat on this drum some more:

- Ever since lipids were vilified as the cause of heart disease in the 50s, our consumption of animal fat has decreasing. Most red meat you buy is very, very lean. Meat used to be marbled. This change in eating habits was recommended by doctors, anyway, and probably isn't a bad idea in the long run. But...

- Ever since WW2 the use of animal fat sources has been decreasing (tallow, lard, butter) and the use of artificial fat sources has been increasing (crisco/shortenings, margarine).

- Up until fairly recently researchers and cholesterol testing did not strongly differentiate between saturated fats and trans fats. Usually they were grouped together, so many studies that indicate a positive correlation between the consumption of saturated fat and heart disease aren't terribly useful for drawing solid conclusions given what we now know.

To be more specific, Anovis, saturated fats are important for synthesizing cholesterol. Which is used for making vitamin D, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, bile and transporting fat-soluble nutrients and some other stuff I'm forgetting. So basically what I'm saying is that vegetarians/vegans are one of: 1.) chugging coconut oil, 2.) low on testosterone, or 3.) dying of heart disease like the rest of us.
