Xbox 360 Media Sharing Problem
2008-07-28, 7:12 PM #1
So I got SP2 on my XP Home edition and windows media player 11.

I go to Library to share the connection to my Xbox 360, but there is no Xbox icon to allow media sharing with.

I think the problem may be that the way my Xbox is connected to the network is that it's plugged in to my laptop downstairs via an ethernet cable and the laptop is connected wirelessly. And to get the Xbox online I bridged the connection. Then again I'm not sure this is the problem.

Any ideas?

Yeah but I don't see the point in dropping $100 bucks to connect my xbox to the internet when I can just bridge the connection through my laptop like I'm currently doing.

You should see the point now, because that's what you'll have to do.

The wireless adapters are $100? Sheesh, I could sell you mine, I have no use for it.

i used to have a 'gaming bridge' but it was flaky as hell and fiddly to set up. I dropped £50 on the MS official one and it works a charm.

Ebay has them for cheaper. Not a lot cheaper, but still cheaper.

Actually I figured it out, I had to change some windows settings and it worked.

Glad I saved 100 bucks.

The bridge with my laptop works just fine, I don't really need an adapter, I was just thinking I may need it for media sharing but I figured it out. Thanks though KOP

What did you change, because media sharing only works on the subnet of that PC, and if you bridged, your 360 would not be on that subnet.

I just changing my media sharing settings on my PC. It was some setting on services.msc that I had to change to "automatic" and it worked from there.

You should purchase the XBox wireless adapter so you can lower your carbon footprint by not running both your 360 and laptop at the same time. People like you are destroying our planet.

Except that the energy used to manufacture that wireless adapter far outweighs the energy he expends running both.

But the adapter has already been manufactured. It's even more appalling not to use it.

That's the common reply to when people use the bridging method, and it certainly does make sense.

But in my house, we generally have that very laptop on quite a bit anyway, so it isn't like we are turning the laptop on just to use it as a router, that would simply be overkill.

But if there is less demand for the adapter, it will stop being manufactured.
