What Client do you use?

(Multiple options if you use something on a different OS)

I used to use Trillian. For a long time in fact. I finally got fed up with it though when i got hte Astra beta. (I mean I know its in beta but sheesh theres only so much gradient I can handle) It also seems to be suffering from feature-itis. Too many features that I'd never need.

Anyway on Windows I use Digsby now (http://www.digsby.com/).

And on OSX I'm using Adium, even though there appears to be a digsby OSX client... ill have to check that out.

Hows about you?

Adium is the best AIM client I've ever used, by far.

I use iChat for the occasional video chat, though.

I've pretty much given up IM clients at home. They make it too easy to get in touch with me. As you can attest mb, I'm pretty easy to get ahold of by phone, and I prefer that. :)

GoogleTalk, Trillian and the godawful Skype (which is what my company uses).

Up until now, I've been using Pidgin for all of my IM accounts and mIRC for IRC. However, I think I'm gonna have to give Digsby a try.

I was not aware there was a client known as IRC.

But since I use mIRC I clicked it.
nope.

I forgot to check for both of these, but I use Pidgin on my Windows machine, and Adium on the iBook.

Miranda IM isn't listed, but when I use Windows, that's what I use. It's extremely small and customizable. On Linux, I use Pidgin.

For IRC I use irssi that I leave up on one of my home servers. I then just SSH in and reattach my GNU screen session to use it. (CLI)

Adium and Digsby. Wouldn't have it any other way, really.

Whats the best webcam/headset client since skype is refusing to work with my friends webcam?

It'd be easy enough to just use stickam.
nope.
2008-08-07, 12:33 PM #16
The problem we ran into with those types of sites such as stickam and tokbox was the insane lag. Skype is virtually lagless.

Stickam isn't usually in the 1-on-1 things. Either way I guess.
nope.

Pidgin, Konversation and Kopete seldom. MSN if I'm talking to a certain someone that wants to play those sound clip things.
2008-08-07, 1:27 PM #19
Adium on the my mac, Pidgin on the linux boxes, and Trillian on windows. I don't really like Trillian (I've tried astra), so I'm going to try digsby.

Digsby is easily the best IM client for Windows. Pidgin, in its recent releases, is also very good, but minimal, which is okay since that's its design.

I haven't used Adium enough to compare it to Digsby, but until Digsby, Adium easily blew away every IM client on the Windows platform.

Oh, for those of you using Pidgin, check out Snarl, it's an application similar to Growl for OS X. It provides application notifications, similar to how Adium does for IMs with Growl, or Digsby.

Oh and for IRC, I use X-Chat. I use the zerostress build of X-Chat. The SilvereX one used to be good until he stopped giving you the option to install the stupid bundled GTK, and when it started crashing when minimized to the tray. And of course the official one costs $20. The zerostress build is a straight up simple build of X-Chat. You have to install GTK to use it, which means you get the real GTK and not some half-assed integrated **** like with SilvereX.

If anyone knows of another IRC client with a good UI for Windows, please let me know. mIRC is a cluttered mess, and most others lack essential features.

i actually got mircs layout to be fairly minimal and clean with a few tweaks. I'll post a shot later.

I've done that too, but for various reasons the entire client still annoys me.

I think what I really like about X-Chat is how it separates the names and messages into two columns, making it easier to follow conversations.

AIM, MSN, and Skype for different occasions.

"irc" and steam

Oh yeah, Steam is great. The ability to chat in-game is fantastic. The entire Steam Community movement has basically been a giant kick in the balls to Xfire.

Kopete.

Also, "Jabber" is a server/protocol, not a client. :P

I prefer using email, but I occasionally use IRC if I need help with programming or MSN to talk to my girlfriend when she's overseas.
? :)

Email—occasionally IRC for nerdy endeavors. I hate instant messengers.

IRC with a variety of clients, MSN (it's actually Windows Live Messenger now), gTalk (mainly just use it as a email notifier, I have like 10 contacts and they all use WLM too), and Pidgin.

I use Trillian, but you guys convinced me to try Digsby.
