Thinking of a new Graphics Card...

Currently running a 2 year old pc

AMD FX-62
4GB RAM
256 Nvidia 8600

Can run Crysis up til the snow, then I had to lower some stuff.

Thinking of getting this

Any other suggestions

P.S I have an 800W PSU with spare connections.

If you are looking for a good mid-range card, I would look at the ATI Radeon HD4850; it has an excellent price to performance ratio.

The Radeon HD4870 gets pretty close to the 280 GTX for around $280 USD. I own one and it's a hell of a card.

The Radeon HD4870 X2's just came out too. Those are around $560+ USD. It's a multi-GPU card.

hmm will have a look

Personally im not going to touch anything above a 9800 gx2 for awhile. The gtx 260 and 280s currently have some stability issues in many of the older games. I'll wait a bit before looking into those. Also by personal preference I go with either xfx or evga.

Is the 8800gts still considered a "good" card? cause I'd say pick up one of those.

The 280's nice, but overpriced compared to the 4870 which will give you only slightly worse performance. It's only 250-ish USD, which is like 180 pounds :p

The 9800GX2s are horrible either way, and they sell for way too much, and xfx and evga are badsauce.

ATI is making a comeback in price:performance, which was a ratio that was seriously out of whack for a couple years.

4850 is great

The 4850 is the absolute best value at the moment. I got one recently and it is just tearing through everything I can throw at it.

Not too sure from what you meant from the text, but I assume you know those prices don't actually translate like that over there.

250 USD is 135 GBP minus VAT.

I'm not talking about exchange rates. Their recommended sales prices are different from the NA market.

I don't suppose you tried JK:DF2 on it? I get something almost like a HOM effect, the screen sorta of tears when moving. Disappointing, but other than JK its exactly like you said - an amazing combination of performance and value.

I'm happy with my 9600GT- paid a bit under $150 months ago...and now I see them well under $100..

That was accounted in, if you notice.

180 after VAT isn't so bad really.

Any good sites with 4870s or 4850s, ideally with 1GB?.
2008-08-16, 8:49 AM #19
assuming you're from the UK

either of those two are good sites to buy from.

Is it creepy that I can calculate a price of a component in britain after VAT to a degree of 5 GBPs of accuracy...without doing any calculations?

Oh mother****er, you're right. Well, you can always get a PCI card and run it using that. Or an older PCI-E card if you have another slot. Or just run it on another machine. Or wait until virtualization is good enough that you can run it through a VM. (Windows 7, maybe?)

Edit: Sige wrote an OpenGL wrapper for JK some time ago. Zeq probably has it. That would probably fix it. I think it broke several things using DirectDraw, like maybe the HUD or the in-game text, but the game should be playable.

Indeed, I've noticed that too. What I'm hoping for however, is that they start sponsoring games so we see a little less "Best played on Nvidia!" which is an annoying and sad truth for many ATI users.

While its not an issue with all Nvidia-titles, I've encountered a few games that someone ran with bad framerate on an ATI and would refuse to utilize the GPU to max capacity.

Run it on a different machine is my solution currently. I would be satisfied using the software renderer except it makes anything 16bit look like total crap. I was just secretly hoping some other 4850 owner found a driver combination/setting to make it work.
