Chernobyl today?

Are they any photos or pictures of Chernobyl in today?

Anyway, would you visit, if you had the chance, Chernobyl (with radiation safety I guess)? I would like to see what the town and the atmosphere looks like. I assume it's very creepy if I drove around. No one in sight. And probably don't need to worry about the speed limit. Heh.

If I'm not mistaken, some of the other reactors kept functioning until they were closed several years back. So it's probably safe and not too creepy.

There was recently somebody who faked stories about riding through the area on a motorcycle. And I got the impression that the area is still restricted.

Anyway, here's the link if you're interested:

Safe really? Well, I guess the area is pretty cleaned up. But doesn't it take about 200 years to completely clear it up?

There was some guy that visited the chernobyl reactor because he was making a computer game about it. I think he was Ukranian.
There was an article about it in PC Gamer UK a few issues back.

I'm not sure what he had to do to get in, but if some lone programmer can get in and do it, I wouldn't be surprised if you can go there on holiday.

Well, there got to be some big town or city that has been evacuated in the world (while the buildings are somewhat intact.)

It can depend - if there are any radioactive materials to clear up... well...

Uranium-235 half-life = 760 million years
Uranium-238 half-life = 4500 million years

So if there is any nuclear fuel kicking about, it's likely no less dangerous than it was back when the reactor went bang.

(For those in the dark about half-life, the idea is that an unstable atomic nucleus kicks out particles more or less at random to try to stabilise itself. They might kick out alpha particles (positively electronically charged Helium nuclei (He 2+)), beta particles (an electron) or gamma 'particles' which is really just a ray. All of these are radioactive. The time it takes for the 'kick outs' within a certain timeframe to halve is the half life of the material. So for a sample U-235 now say giving out 200 counts per minute of radiation, that sample would have fallen to 100 counts per minute in 760 million years time.)

If anyone knows more and I'm wrong, correct me.

It wouldn't be the U238 (DU) that'd be giving much of a problem, it'd be the Pu238 and Pu239 you'd have to watch out for.
