Bionic Commando Rearmed (XBLA, PSN, PC)
2008-08-16, 8:59 PM #1
It just came out this week for XBLA, PSN, and PC (Direct2Drive). For some reason it's $14.99 on the PC as oppose to $9.99 for the console versions.

The game is basically a remake of Bionic Commando on the NES and Arcade except with 3D graphics, while keeping the 2D gameplay intact. Of course some new features are added such as offline two player coop, challenges, etc (I never played the original so I'm not sure what are the changes). The controls might get some getting used to at first since you can't jump in the game, but once you get a hang of it the game is pretty fun.

I recommend it if the (limited) demo gave you a good feeling, especially for $10.

Isn't there another Bionic Commando game supposed to come out soon?

Yeah, this is the PR for the new 3D one. This is what I'm more excited about, though.

I loved the original bionic commando. I guess I will have to finally buy some MS POINTS so I can play the game.

Same although the trailer for the new 3D Bionic Commando did look intriguing.

It's so nostalgic to play this game.

I remember the levels and the original versions of the game music. The remixes are pretty good

I've been playing it for pretty much half the day (and doing poorly) BUT having fun nonetheless

The PC version is more expensive due to some extra content. Can't remember where I read that article.

Actually I think I saw that somewhere too. Do you remember what the extra content is?

I tried playing the NES version of Bionic Commando today and I'm actually finding it quite fun. In some ways this version is easier and harder than the remake. It's harder in the fact that you die in one hit at the start until you level up. Furthermore, touching an enemy decreases your life. You can't bring all of your equipment with you either unlike Rearmed.

In contrast, Rearmed does have harder (better designed in my opinon) bosses and the bazooka isn't as much of a god weapon as it is in the NES version. The first time I fired the bazooka in Rearmed; I was too close to an enemy and the explosion killed me. Another difference I notice is that the bionic arm seem to stick out longer in the NES version after you fire it. This makes it easier to grapple from place to place.

The extra content is DRM.

This would be funny if the XBLA/PSN versions didn't also have DRM. But they do. So it's not. :downswords:

Okay ironically this game is harder than the NES version. I played through the NES version recently just to see how the remake compare to it.

Elements that made the NES version harder
- No continues: You have to start from the beginning of the game if you lose all your lives.
- Damage from touching enemies: Touching regular enemies will kill you for some reason.
- One hit kill at the beginning: The NES version has a level up system where you gain more hit points from collecting a certain amount of bullets. I do like this system, kind of makes me wonder why they didn't go with it in the remake.
- Limited equipment: You can only bring one type of weapon with you, one type of armor protection, one type of communicator, and one accessory (boots, pills, etc).

Elements that made the NES version easier
+ Level up system: You can take a lot of hits if you grind to acquire more hit points
+ Health pills: Instant recovery of all your hit points. Rearmed only doubles your life bar.
+ Bazooka: The god weapon of the NES version. Unlike Rearmed, you can't kill yourself with this weapon, it passes through enemies, the projectile travels fast, and it does awesome damage.
+ Easier bosses: The bosses are more straightforward than the ones in Rearmed (I like Rearmed's bosses better though).
+ Easier enemies: No blue barrier guy and less aggressive enemies
+ Secret passages: They're simple overhead levels as oppose to being hellish platforming levels
+ No Albatross level: I hate that room with that green gas and switch....

Time really flies doesn't it? I can't believe it has been 10-11 years since Jedi Knight was released.
