Cliffs at the bottom.

I bought my bike ('00 SV650) several months ago. The previous owner told me that he did a valve adjustment (or something to do with the valves- I don't recall specifically), and when he went to start it, it wouldn't turn over.

It had been dropped- dented tank, cracked plastics and twisted bars..but this was my first bike, so I wasn't too concerned about looks. The frame appeared straight, and I could deal with the cosmetic issues. Why did I buy it, you ask? Because I picked it up (with a clean title) for 500 bucks. Worth a gamble, IMO.

A friend and I tore into it yesterday- pulled the top head off. Everything appears to be okay, except the threads in the head for one of the cover bolts was stripped. Here's what we saw:

We pulled the front cylinder apart today- started like this, looking perfectly fine:

Here's the whole bike, as it sat:

Pulled the cam covers off. Looks a little funny, doesn't it?

And now, ladies and gentlemen, I present the other side of the picture!

Also notice the gap between the other valve and the head:

Better picture:

And one more, just for kicks.

Here's the missing link!

And, the unhappy piston:

I'm guessing that, for a bike that's been dropped this hard (and only cost me $500), it's probably not worth replacing the motor...but I thought I'd ask the collective opinion of you all.

At this point, I'm strongly leaning towards parting it out and buying something that won't require a complete rebuild. Any thoughts or suggestions (or part requests!) are more than welcome. smiley

Cliffs:
2000 SV650 - bought for $500 because it wouldn't turn over. We found the problem- the timing was catastrophically wrong and a valve snapped off and the stem punched the piston. Is it worth salvaging?

Pics have been fixed.

The guys at SVRider are indicating that it may very well be worth rebuilding, as it's mostly apart already anyway. Maybe I'll replace the pistons, do a valve job & get some cams. Hmm.

I will second the "factory service manual" recommendation. I got mine for my 03 on ebay for 20 bucks and it's like new. The step-by-step instructions are really thorough and easy to understand, and they have pictures for each step of the way.

I found a downloadable one for free! :awesome: :awesome:

I'm planning on replacing both exhaust valves/guides and the piston/ring/rod, honing the cylinder and calling it good..I might do all the valve seals too. I'm thinking about port/polish for the heads, but haven't yet decided. I'll probably be going with a Vapor gauge setup and a set of stock bars (unless I find something I like better). Looking forward to getting her on the road! :)

You should see if they have a bore kit for that.

I can't tell by the pictures, but it looks like you're going to need to have your cylinder honed and go to next oversize anyways.

No, you do not want to oversize (at least not anything significant). When people go up to even 700 other stuff (LIKE CRANKS) start breaking - run a search on that site.

Also, are the gages fubar? If not, why not stick with stock?

Also, I wouldn't bother with port/polish or any of that crap. Get it back in working condition with the least amount of time/money and still a quality job.

I think the SV650 is fast enough as it is, and if it's your first road bike, well you don't want to spend too much on it anyway. But maybe the 1st gens are signficantly slower, I don't know.

The tach is demolished. It went down (fairly hard, apparently) on the left side.

Revived because someone left their internet on in my building.

The engine on my bike actually just siezed. Don't have a good idea why yet, I don't have alot of the tools or the money for a rebuild at the moment.

I'll probably pick up a dual sport when I get a little out of debt, so I can get another job. As it stands right now I ride my bicycle about 80 miles a week, **** is getting a little old.. I'm not even tired anymore from it. I'm just wired 24/7.

doh..that sucks!

My replacement cylinder head came in yesterday- the rest of my parts should be in by Monday!

I bought a spiffy jacket, too... :awesome:

I have a spiffy jacket that stares at me from the corner which causes me to sulk.

I rode like 300 miles on the S90 in three weeks... That bike was such a blast.

Going to rebuild my top end with ATC 90 parts (better material, better parts) throw a powroll piston in there (CNC machined, takes me from 50 to 54mm and from 8.2-1 to 10.5-1 compression).

Should be alot of fun, it just costs money I don't have.

I'll probably pick up an XR250 or a CRF250 and throw some lights and signals on it. If I can get one I'd love one of those new CRF230L's. They're low-rev de-tuned CRF250s with a little less displacement and they meet EPA and CARB standards. The CRF250 is supposedly based on the XR250, so by extension these should be pretty bullet proof.

They're only like $4000 new, I might pick one up used this winter.
