Sushi

I just moved back to university a couple of days ago. I lack a refrigerator as I'm getting that later, and I went to H.E.B. to get some food when I found some cheap sushi in their frozen area. I tried it out and it was delicious for store bought sushi. I bought about $40 worth of sushi to put in my roommates fridge. I bought some teriyaki rolls, california rolls, sushimi, spicy shrimp and spicy salmon rolls. I have about half of it left over.

Focus: What delicacies do you enjoy that other people may not like?

You guys should try raw lobster and raw shrimp. They are a lot more expensive compared to your typical salmon and tuna though.

Well, sashimi and sushi use fish that is far more fresh than anything you've probably ever eaten. Fish gets its "fishy" smell and flavor from sitting around too much before cooking. Sashimi grade fish is incredibly fresh.

They also take more precautions when filleting and cutting the fresh to prevent the spread of germs (probably don't use the same dirty knives over and over), and in addition to that they freeze it at extreme sub zero temperatures for days.

I'm making sushi this evening. Just California rolls, since the only place I can get fresh enough fish is the Asian market and I don't feel like driving out there.

I'm curious how much "$40 worth" of sushi would be. Considering how much the price of sushi can vary, it doesn't really say much. There are three all-you-can-eat sushi restaurants around here, and it can cost as little as $10 for all you can eat.
I'm just a little boy.

There's a place in Rochester called California Rollin', it's rather good. When I went with happydud and co last fall, I had some roll with bacon in it. Wow. :awesome:

We have an asian market? I know they sell fresh fish at the public market but this is news to me? Where is it? I need to go there now.

Also from what I've heard alot of people whine about california rollin being too "americanized". I myself have yet to eat there, although I want to.

That aside, I didn't realize how many of you are living in rochester. I need to get out of this rock called fairport asap.

Sushi is awesome. I stayed away for a long time because of the stigma attached to it here, but I tried it in January and I've loved it since. Never had store-bought though, I could see it being hit and miss.

Yea, store-bought is indeed hit or miss, even within the same store. While stores might have a variety of different ways to cook their rice (drier, more sticky, softer, harder, brown, etc), amongst the same establishment the cooks may not prepare them in the same way, and of course ingredients might be fresher or older.

Making it yourself is longer but with the right recipe, its always good!

I'd like to but I've heard far too many stories about shrimp ceviche ending in the phrase "gastrointestinal meltdown."

Sushi is alright, I could live without it. A $60 meal for two at a mediocre sushi place without drinks and I'm still hungry afterwards. Some of the best I've had was in Hudson Valley, NY, where they served a "spicy scallop roll" using raw scallops. I've never seen that anywhere else. Some of the worst I've had was in Paris where they served live snails.

I find with store purchased that its all in the type of seaweed used in the roll. Some seaweed just tastes like ****.
