So from what I can gather in these articles some protesters unveiled a Free Tibet flag, started shouting, and were quickly detained.

As for the RIT students, it seems like they were simply taking photos of the protesters and were detained for that. Really dumb, but it seems like they're okay.
I wonder how much this story is going to get talked about though.

There are three official protests zones in the Olympic zone. But you need a permit to protest.

China has denied all applications.

Two of the hundreds of people whose homes were destroyed to make way for the Olympics filed for permits so many times, that they were threatened with a year in a labor camp if they filed again.

I wonder what would happen if someone in the olympic stadium went up to a mic and shouted "Chinks" into it.

They aren't stupid, they're just trying to fight to get their protest seen and heard. Students for a Free Tibet have had 8 protests during the Olympics, and the worst that happened to any of them is detain and deport.

China can certainly stop protests, but I'm sure if they tried to imprison or otherwise punish an American protester, there would be big repercussions.

Especially with them trying so hard to cast China in a new light...something like that would throw it all away.

See, it's one thing to say that the USA has worse free speech than China over here, but it actually put it to the test is asking for it, even if you are a citizen of another country.

I don't get why people protest in the bees nest? It just doesn't make sense. Most chinese people are discrimanitory against Tibetans to begin with. Then your asking them to defy their country, which most have distinct affection for (true, brainwashed, or inspired by fear) and join in to protest? I think the free thinking chinese have learned to keep their mouths shut til they are well out of their own country's jurisdiction, after the last episode of protest turned massacre.


Its like someone having a pro taliban protest in the middle of DC. Granted due to our free speech amendment theres not much we can do about it, its also NOT going to be effective AT ALL. Same theory.
