I have a 2003 Jetta that has been hell. :(

It recently left me stranded with a dead battery. It was the original battery so I figured time for a new one. Replaced that, it drove fine for a week, then left me dead again. So I replaced the alternator, which had the voltage regulator on the back.

Did that last night, it left me stranded today.

What the f**k?

Maybe you have a short somewhere that's draining the battery?

it doesn't ever die overnight though, only after short trips

maybe charging is ecu controlled and if the battery is low it acts stupid and won't charge? just thinking out loud

got it home plugged into a charger - we'll see

Hook the battery up to your nipples and make sure it isn't broken.
nope.

None of your electronics turn on? No lights, no dashboard, nothing?
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I'm kind of with the battery is being drained theory.

The only way to know for sure is to pull fuses.

Are the lights bright?

Your starter may have a lose connection, which would cause clicking issue. Does jumpstarting work?

let it charge for a few hours - now it runs, but the battery light is flickering and idle is a little rough.

it's not the starter - it always starts when it has power ;)

Did you replace the alternator with a new one or a refurbished one?

Test the alternator.

it's a new alternator - it has more voltage when the car is running - ~14v vs ~12v

it's a bosch part, so was the oem though, and it has the vw/audi logo stamped on it.

I don't know why else the battery light would flicker..check engine light show anything?

no check engine light, negative terminal feels a little loose - but if i tighten it any more i think the bolt will snap in half haha

might need to replace the terminal. if not i'm thinking it's the ecu :(

Start by replacing the terminal. That could definitely cause your starting problem.
woot!
