Functional music management?

I need something simple, non automated, non bloated, and non IDIOTIC that is good for viewing/playing my music library. Windows media player has been decent enough until I updated to version 11 and want to throw my computer out the window. Oh yeah and don't say Winamp.

If you're ever even thinking about using an iPod, you pretty much have to use iTunes. I don't like it, but I can't use anything else with my iPod. :-(

I hate pictures, everything is described as if I'm trying to navigate my way through an international airport. I just want to see my files in a simple folder tree and be able to form a playlist queue.

What's wrong with winamp?

I used foobar2000 for awhile back when 0.9.5 first was released, it was a simplistic last I remember, might check that one out.

Last time I checked winamp was basically "Make one huge list with all your music and live with it"

I want to be able to jump around between albums like what WMP used to be before they updated it and zapped away everything that made me like it. I guess I could try an older version of it if I can find it...

You can do that with the media library in winamp. I havn't used the winamp playlist in quite some time, i just pick the album or artist I want from the library and hit play.

I'm confused... you can still browse artists/albums with WMP. In fact, I prefer WMP (and Zune). I can't stand iTunes/iPod.

Voila.

You must have not checked Winamp in the past couple... years? It's had media library since WA3, and it's pretty much exactly what you want. You have your whole library, you make and manage playlists as you like, you browse it as you like, etc.

Foobar works well right out of the box these days. No crazy customizations to get some nice options out of it:

i use a combination of manual organization of my files and foobar for playback

now album art isn't automatically downloaded like with some fancy all in one options like wmp but that's where album art aggregator comes in

I am usually not a fan of WMP and Zune but I have to use them because of there media sharing abilities to my xbox..

Winamp. Small. Easy. Simple.

Or if when you close it you keep getting errors, just use itunes.

My favorite feature with winamp is its loadable playlists. Can load whatever you want organized however you want by simply loading up the playlist of your choice. Meaning you only have to add to your library once per list creation. I know its like this with several other players, but winamp seems to function the best with it. I don't think Itunes has that at all. All Itunes playlists are based off of mp3's in the library, which I hate. I could be wrong about this, I just don't put any effort into Itunes aside from loading the library to my specs each time I use it.

Go hunt down a copy of Windows Media Connect.

Problem solved.

WMP is horrible. I'm stuck with it until I get my laptop. I can't wait to use Amarok again.

I'd recommend songbird or winamp for you.

Songbird is neat
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

I love foobar2000. IMHO it's exactly what you need.
What I hated about Winamp was that you didn't have (or I couldn't find it) a way to sort songs already in the playlist. It would always add my songs in a random order.

Bloated trash.

Try Songbird or foobar2000.

You can view and modify the current playlist just fine.

Erm, besides the built-in sorting functions, you can drag/drop to put the songs in any order you want.

This is not true, by the way. The encryption that iPods use have been implemented in numerous music applications, Winamp included. I think someone wrote a plugin for WMP too.

Unless you have an iPhone. The encryption is different, so I don't believe anyone has it working yet.

Unless the specific version you had had a bug, this has been in Winamp since... 2?

Anything you add to winamp's playlist is added in the order of selection. If you select a group of files, it will retain that order.

I'm not sure, I think I could only find options to sort by filename and folder, not by various meta-data. My folder-structure was a little borked because I messed up when I transcoded some multiple-artists albums (long story), so using the playlist to find a specific song wasn't so easy.
Perhaps I was just blind. Can't check anymore because I've uninstalled Winamp after I fell in love with foobar.
