PELHAM MANOR - An intoxicated Bronx man fleeing a minor personal injury accident rammed a Jeep station wagon, nearly amputating the 17-year-old driver's leg at 3:40 p.m. yesterday, police said. The Pelham Manor teen had been on his way to football practice. The injured youth went right into surgery at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, Pelham police Detective Kenneth Campion said. He was in very serious condition, Campion said.Police believe Desmond A. Shand, 40, of the Bronx was fleeing an accident in which he was involved on Pelham Parkway moments earlier - he is accused of striking a 56-year-old Mount Vernon man riding a bicycle. That man had leg, back and arm pain and bruises. The cyclist came to police at the Townsend Avenue and Plymouth Street accident scene and said the same car had just hit him, police said.Shand's Nissan was resting up against 195 Townsend Ave. He was uninjured, but the teen sat in his heavily damaged car, wearing football pants, with the bottom half of his leg hanging out of the car, police said.He "just crushed him," Campion said. The Westchester County accident reconstruction team is working on determining how fast Shand was going to do so much damage, police said.Shand refused to take sobriety tests and a court order for his blood was obtained, police said. He smelled of alcohol, had glassy, bloodshot eyes and was staggering, police said. Shand told police he had been on his way from the Bronx to pick up his wife at the New Rochelle Dumont Nursing Home. Police said he could not explain why he was on the village's side streets.Shand was arraigned this morning on second-degree vehicular assault, a felony; leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and driving while intoxicated, both misdemeanors; and refusing to take a breathalyzer test, a violation. He was being held without bail and is to be in Town Court tomorrow evening.

He went into the hospital last night, and I havent gotten any updates since then. So I'm not sure how bad his injuries are. Pretty sure he's going to live, but as of right now who knows whats going to happen to his legs :/

So yea. Here's hoping for the best

Good, they caught the guy, and sounds like he's going away for a long time.

I have three friends who've been involved in motorbike accidents. One died and the other 2 both lost legs (both from the knee down) - both survivors have lived full and awesome lives. I know I'd never want it to happen to me, but it's definitely better than being dead.

I can't tell you how many times in the last few weeks I've almost been nailed by people who were intoxicated, not paying attention, or in too much of a ****ing a hurry.

Drunk drivers are no better or worse than street racers, people on cell phones (FYI, talking on your cell phone is apparently as bad as 5 beer driving or something like that), and people in too much of a ****ing hurry.

I REALLY hate people like this. They aren't only putting themselves in danger, they're putting everyone around them in danger and it's ****ing despicable.

PELHAM MANOR - Hernan Kenny, the Pelham Manor high school football player seriously injured in a car crash Tuesday, is scheduled to undergo a second surgery today, this time at Weill Cornell Medical Center, where doctors are continuing to try save his left leg, police said this morning.

Kenny, 17, is in serious condition, police said. A rod was put into his leg during the first surgery earlier this week, they said.

Kenny's Jeep was broadsided on Townsend Avenue, nearly amputating his leg. The other driver, Desmond Shand, 40, of the Bronx, was drunk, police said.

Shand appeared in court last night and was ordered held on $250,000 bail. He is due back in court next Thursday. He is charged with felony second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving while intoxicated, both misdemeanors, and refusing to take chemical tests, a violation. Shand's blood was drawn after police got a court order.

Apparently he's doing better. Out of ICU now. Seems like he'll be able to keep his legs thankfully
