Do you ever work too long?
2008-09-06, 10:30 AM #1
Yesterday I worked from 7:30 - 3:00. Today I'm supposed to work our first home football game from 1:30 until I believe almost midnight. I was looking at my schedule and realized I was supposed to get off work at 12:30 on friday...and I can't help but wonder if I did the same thing on monday. Combined with the game this weekend, I think I will have over 40 hours this week, which means I might be about to get in trouble. Maybe I'll have to slack off next week or something.

I can't help it though, I really enjoy my job. Do you guys ever work way longer than you're supposed to by accident, because you just enjoy your job so much?

Because I enjoy it? No.

But for 2 or 3 weeks at Christmas I work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week.

I'm unemployed.

I'm unemployed, and I doubt there'll ever be a job that I find interesting enough that I'll lose myself in it.

Unless it's something related to science, but I'm not a scientist. And I doubt I will be.

All the time
During High School I worked a food shack in a vacation resort. I never worked "too long" but I would go to work when I wasn't scheduled... usually only to justify taking a bunch of food away with me after I put in a little work. My boss would cut off any overtime you accidentally put in and then give you time off later. But a couple of us hard workers would pretty much work 12 hour days and make a buttload of OT.

But most jobs won't let ya.. So actually I haven't worked too long since I was 18.

I work 40+ hours every week. Whats your point?

Heck, during the summer between my 2 graphic design school years, I worked 70-80 hours a week and got only 1 day off in the whole summer.

I'm unemployed. Have my degree and I don't even know what field I want to go into.

Anyway, I used to work at CompUSA and I once worked from like 4AM to 6:30pm. I didn't once see the sun that day, it was very weird.

It sucks when you work a lot more and you're on salary. :(

Usually that is reflected in your salary.

I work an average of 50 hours per week. I also spend about 15 hours per week studying. To me, this is too much. If I were independently wealthy, I would travel the world with my girlfriend & work much less.

I once had a job where I worked an average of 60 hours per week. On top of that I had to travel. Sometimes by plane, sometimes by truck. It wasn't uncommon for me to work for 48 hours without sleep. I had to quit this job eventually because the pay was horrible & it was tearing my life apart.

I wish I had the problem of liking my job too much...
? :)

That's alright. I would never *ever* submit myself to the tortures of a desk job, but if I ever did find myself in that situation, I would find it hard to be productive with the internet in front of me.

I'm salaried, and I've worked 10+ hours per day pretty much every day for the last two months.

Partially this is because I love my job, but also because my company is offering free dinner to anyone who stays late and works till 7:00.

Back when I used to work at a government lab, and at a startup before that, I pulled several all-nighters (both the lab and the startup had showers and places to sleep).

The best thing is, with the exception of the startup, none of my jobs have expected me to work extra hours, I just really get into the work.

I am salaried, so there is no incentive to work extra. Sometimes, though, I do it anyway if I find it interesting or enjoyable (though I cannot do it too much since all of the work is on contract).

When I started my job I used to work late because I knew we weren't going to hit deadlines. Then it became apparant that we weren't going to hit deadlines because nobody really knew what they wanted. I've stopped working late because it benefits nobody, if I enjoyed my work I'd work late just because I'm the kind of person who will keep working at a problem until it's solved.

I work anywhere between 45 and 60 hours a week.

It sucks, but getting a paycheck of $1000+ every 2 weeks is nice, unfortunately I don't have any time to spend it.

I worked 8:30am-10:00pm on Thursday and 8:00am-11:00pm yesterday..does that count?
woot!

I wish I was on salary and wasn't in school anymore. I'd just work all day every day...well, until 5:00. Then I'd leave and spend all my money to maintain my poor status.

I'm on salary, I'm not expected to work more than 40 hours per week.

Running my own company makes me work too long almost daily. Last monday i worked from 6:00 to 17:30 (that's 6AM-5:30PM for you burgerlandians), and the finnish laws say that you're not allowed to drive a truck any longer than 9 hours per day, 10 if you get home during the last hour.

I end up working about a 45hr week most weeks. That doesn't include for the 20hrs of driving to and from work either.
2008-09-07, 8:10 AM #28
Not really... I get paid to work 40 hours a week, and that's what I generally do. Maybe a little more in a given day if there's something that really needs to be done, but in that case it means we get to bill the client more so I have no problem with that.

Working the graduation ball last July was a 17 hour shift for me, from 2pm - 7am. We ended up having a drink afterwards because we decided it was really, really late rather than really, really early.

I'm at work between 7:30 and 7:40am and leave close to 5:00. I'm usually the last one to leave besides the cleaning crew.

I'm at work now, but I've got nothing to do. .(

I do overtime if I've got to meet a deadline and I think that I won't make it otherwise. But that hasn't happened so often on this job, yet.

My contract states that 10 hours overtime are already in the salary. That means that I don't have to do overtime but I also don't get paid extra if I only do 10 hours overtime a month.
