Civilization 4: the version I have is somehow incompatible with the latest firaxis patch (and of course the vendor's latest version is <) and refuses to launch once the patch is installed complaining that it cannot find the DVD, forcing me to reinstall and waste time.

I bought C&C Generals Deluxe edition, and right off the bat, it told me that the cd key for the expansion was banned.

Similar happened to me with Diablo 2. I bought this may because I wanted to play co-op with a friend over Battle.net. Lo and behold, my legal Key for both Diablo 2 and the expansion were banned.

None.

However, I'm still waiting for the day some cop's gonna bust into my apartment, dig up my 2005 Steam backup of Half-Life 2 and go all "HAHA PIRACY".

I tried loading my original Half Life key into Steam, but it wouldn't take it. Chances are some keygen snagged it.

When I came in to replay Diablo 2 when D3 was announced, my key was taken by some key-gen kid, so I went to EB and copied the CD-Key from another copy of Diablo 2 that was on sale.

Didn't say I was, didn't try to rationalize my actions, didn't try to glorify them. I just wanted to kill zombies and ghosts and demons.

That's way worse than just pirating the thing. Now you've screwed over some poor guy who buys the thing and ruined tangible goods.

I had a copy of office refuse to work after I reinstalled it once. Ended up having to send microsoft a photocopy of the cd case to prove I actually owned it.

Stupid SecuROM thinks my laptop is using CD burning software that it doesn't like and refuses to install my legal copy of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic so I was forced to download a CD crack just to play a game I legally own. Thankfully my desktop doesn't have this issue.

The closest such case that's happened to me is the misplacement of my diablo 2 key.

Not a PC game, but I was unable to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus on a friend's DVD player. No problems on my Linux computer, which has to crack the "copy protection" to view the content...
Sorry for the lousy German

GRID. Stupid SecuROM crap was the most finicky peice of junk I've ever had to deal with. CodeMaster's brilliant tech support consisted of "u hav a virus lol".

I had to download a crack for it. Good times.

When I tried to registered my copy of HL1 which I bought when it came out.. steam told me that my key was already in use.. and in order to "prove" it to steam, would cost me $10.. as much as the game new costs =P

Oh, when I tried to get KOTOR (Or maybe it was JA...) the first time, I got 3 different brand-new unopened boxes where the CD-Key didn't work. It was bollocks.

Once I was walking down the street with a copy of Zoo Tycoon in my pocket and I was arrested.

It's astounding to me the moral integrity that the majority of Massassi still holds when **** like this happens. I turned to pirating at least 5 years ago. Call me a terrible person.

I don't get keygen collisions. I don't get how developers could be stupid enough to let them happen. Use like, a 20 digit, base 36 GUID generated from non-random source and you pretty much will never get collisions.

I've only had one key-gen collision, back with the HL gold pack. The HL key worked fine, but the Blue Shift didn't. Didn't bother to try the others, since the HL was good for all of them.

Also, I've taken back games for ridiculous SecuROM configs, notably that I need to reboot my computer after running ProcExp. I put up with crap about having games mounted (with ISOs I made from my CDs) since that's a quick fix.

This is like reason number 2 why you can buy a new game and instantly be banned.
