Anyone know where I can get something along the lines of winzip for free?

I want to compress a bunch of large JPEG's and send them to my cousin.
This signature agrees with the previously posted signatures. To violate previously posted signatures is a violation of the EULA for this signature and you will be subject to unruly behavior.

Meh I'm trying to figure out how to use it.

Can I compress stuff without having to automatically set up this outlook e-mail account thing?

With windows select a bunch of them right click send to compressed folder

with 7z right click 7zip add to archive

OS X and Windows both have native compressing utilities, but otherwise I use ZipGenius.

I use WinZip 8.1. It's free (and unregistered). Even though the 21-day evaluation period has passed, it continues to work. It's only 1.7mb if you want me to email it to you or PM you a DL link.

7-Zip is decent, although the UI is ugly. Google for 7-Zip icon replacements. There are guides to replacing them with better ones. For example, mine use the Tango icon theme from Gnome.

It's slow for me, unzipping stuff like api docs seems to take hours

Uhm, JPEGs are already compressed. Any additional "compression" should make the resulting file (slightly) bigger.

I click "add to archive" and my files seem to be the same size as before I "compressed" them inside the zip file.

I've got about 65ishMB of high-quality JPEG's and the zip file seems to be about 64MB.

Am I missing something here?

Does the compression not "compress" them enough or am I just doing it wrong.

As mentioned earlier, JPEGs are already compressed files. ZIP (or any other similar software) is not going to be able to compress them much further. It's not infinite compression, or else every zip you get off the internet would be 50000 zips inside themselves reducing the filesize to like 10 bytes. :downswords:

You might want to upload the zip to a file sharing site like megaupload or zshare. Email isn't usually happy with attachments that big.

Further, JPEG is much more effective at compressing images than ZIP and similar algorithms, because it is specialized for images. ZIP uses a general purpose algorithm. You should never bother compressing images like JPEGs or songs like MP3s, ZIP won't be able to do a good job on those.
