I don't know how many people here know much about guns, but I'm thinking about buying a rifle to go along with my shotgun, and maybe going hunting with my friends sometime soon. All I want in a gun is for it to be the best, simplest, and most affordable gun. I don't need anything fancy. I'm looking at bolt actions chambered for .308, and so far I'm leaning strongly towards a Savage 11G, and maybe a Swift scope, though I don't know which.

Does anyone know much about these kinds of rifles or have any opinions on Savage rifles and Swift scopes? Also, go ahead and post your hunting guns if you use 'em (not your military gun collection! Or do that too. I don't care.)

Oh, this is the gun I'm looking at, by the way: http://www.savagearms.com/11g.htm

I hoped this was about Fred Savage.

Is that a muzzleloader?

Oh, and I went to my favorite pawn shop today (It's also a really good place to buy or look at guns, new AND used) and he had a .308 Winchester model 70, blued steel and wood stock, used, for about $329. That was very attractive to me.

Savage had a pretty good track record from what I have seen second hand. Be sure to read reviews of the specific gun though, every company has a line of lemons.

IMO, .223 is fine for hunting most North American game. If you are field savvy enough a 12 guage is fine, though it's hard to hunt with friends like that.

In the end, IMO for what you are talking about, you can't beat a nice remington 700. There are a number of models, and it mostly depends on what you find in a shop.

that model 70 for $329... if there is nothing wrong with it that is a very good deal even for the "post 64" model 70s

inspect it thoroughly though

Of course the Rem 700 is nice, but it's also expensive. If I could find a deal on one I might consider it..I'll start researching those more, too.

Yeah, I was surprised to see the model 70 for so cheap, I didn't do much more than glance it over and hold it. Once I get the actual money I might go in and grill the guy and see. It looked a bit old and well worn, but not in a bad way at first glance. The action still felt smooth enough to me. What kinds of things should I look for and ask about the Winchester to make sure it's still in good condition?

You might want to ask Winchester about that. Personally the biggest thing is cracks in the bolt/receiver and real imperfections in the barrel.
