Pommy's Poll #44: 56k?
2008-09-16, 2:39 PM #1
Thrawn's thread made me think -- does anyone even use 56k anymore?

I've been on cable since around '01 or '02, I think.

Some of us aren't fortunate enough to live in areas where there are decent options for high speed internet. A lot of people still use 56k, and it still serves as a reliable backup option for when my DSL goes down. I'd like to see fax machines disappear long before 56k.

I hate Comcast as a company, but it's the best I can do around here. I'm definitely no low-bandwidth-user, though. ;)

He said *decent* options. Satellite is terrible.

I'm currently on a 10 mbit ADSL connection.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

satellite is actually pretty decent these days. we switched over a couple months ago and i have noticed virtually no difference.

Wait.. you can live in an area that doesn't get cable internet?

OK, I've been to some pretty backwater places (Montana) and there was cable.

Even then, where cable isn't available DSL usually is?

I actually live on a road where there are no cable lines run. To run cable to my house, I would have to run cable down the entire length of the road. I have satellite television and DSL through my phone company.

You haven't tried playing any games yet.

Your ping will be in the range of seconds, instead of milliseconds.

i play TF2 pretty regularly with no lag, so no. you're wrong.

I have DSL at home, but I'm in a US Forest Service barracks right now, so I have to use my phone to get online.

I heard some horrible things about Comcast. But it couldn't be as bad as what I've heard around the grapevine.

Cablevision is the way I go. Not bad.

No lag on satellite internet eh? When did they start implementing faster-than-light connection speeds?

The lowest *physically possible* ping you could get on satellite is about 240 ms, which is just the time it takes a signal to travel up to geostationary orbit and back.

What Kyle said. If you don't get any lag, then you don't have satellite.

i'm sorry i meant that there isnt enough lag for me to notice it. perhaps i am mistaken. i do know for certain we dont have cable anymore.

I've been back on dial up about 6 months now. Moved out of broadbands range. The only option I have is Sat and it's just not worth the price for what you get.

~300ms ping would be incredibly noticible on TF2. It practically ruined JK gameplay at those rates.

i was sorely mistaken. our phone/internet/TV had been with Time Warner (cable) before, and now we have dish+windstream DSL. sorry for arguing.
