Wow, I wonder where that "God listens to Slayer" board is. It has to be in Cincinnati, 700 WLW is a local AM radio station.

It might, if the difference between the RPM of the blades and the turntable is high enough. Since the engine that turns the blades is turning itself, it has to turn the blades even faster.

The turntable goes CW. The blades on that turn CCW. The blades RPM is measured relative the body of the helicopter. If the blades spin at the same RPM as the turntable, the blades are stationary. Therefore, the blades must spin faster to achieve the same lift than if the helicopter was not on a turntable. There is an upper limit to how fast the engine in the helicopter can spin the blades.

So, in short : It might, if the difference in RPM is enough to generate the necessary lift.

Civilian helicopters usually have skids. And the wheels aren't going to work so well on a turntable unless they are all free-range casters. (They aren't)
2008-09-17, 3:02 PM #24
Actually it would depend on the placement of the wheels. If there were 3 (2 at the body, one at the tail) only the tail would need a free-range caster.

If there were 4 right where the "skids" generally are, then it most likely would not need any at all. It wouldn't turn perfectly but it would certainly not be just sitting on top.

Regardless, the "pictured" helicopter has wheels anyway :p

You ruined this thread, that's what.
DO NOT WANT.
2008-09-17, 3:07 PM #26
But not casters. The wheels would be turning at an angle to the surface under them, that's going to cause problems.

The helicopter problem actually depends on the drive mechanism from the engine to the rotor. If it were a small electric helicopter in which the motor was decoupled from the shaft (where the rotor can spin freely), it would take off. However, on a real helicopter the motor will have to physically engage against the drive to make it spin. This means that spinning the turntable will spin the blades in the opposite direction, and the motor will have to work harder to get it to the same RPM as normal.

So JM is right unless it's an electric motor with a free spinning rotor.

Incidentally, the real answer to the helicopter problem was to turn on the tail rotor. Just FYI.
